It has been a while since I've updated my build page. Nothing too exciting for the general masses, but the work has kept me busy and happy out on the road!

    IMG_1303.jpg

Added two controllable RGB LED strips to the camper shell. Now I can have white, night-vision-saving red, or any number of other colors, in several levels of brightness, as well as fades and changes to the beat of the music. Desert disco!

    IMG_1316.jpg

Added a roof rack to the shell. The universal rails, feet, black cross bars, and black jerry can tray are Frontrunner, and the rest is somewhat obviously my own ghetto-rigged setup. A 2x12x12 cut / ripped into quarters for the main planks, and various bolts and u-bolts I had on hand for mount / lash points.

    IMG_1372.jpg

The black bag is covering a utility cart I planned to use for hauling my photography gear when going on foot. It sucks though - need bigger tires for the rough terrain. Anyhow... the spare board space can be used for firewood, cargo boxes, etc. Then there are two Quick Fists on the side for a shovel

    _65A1408.jpg

For the interior I've removed the access cab seats to make more cargo space. With the seats out I noticed a lot more road noise, especially from the exhauster vents, so I tried to do some soundproofing to mitigate that, without impairing the function of the vents. More on that here.

    IMG_1347_annotated.jpg

Then I built some shelves. For some reason I don't yet have decent photos of the driver's side system. Maybe because it's a quick and dirty super ugly hack. Not that the passenger side is much better, but at least I covered it with some cheap padding and fabric from Goodwill. On this shelf goes two 6-7 gal water jugs and my cooler. Underneath I can slide my two narrow Dewalt part boxes that I've converted to toolboxes, then three plastic storage tubs with non-refrigerated food.

    _65A1346.jpg

Took almost a year, but couldn't resist the pull of the Plasti Dip forever. Before (above)...

    IMG_4819.jpg

    And after:

    _65A1367.jpg

I wanted to remove the dealer sticker...

    IMG_4806.jpg

But decided to leave the No Bull bull for a bit...

    IMG_4826.jpg

I really don't love the bulbous front bumper, but I can't afford to change it right now. Since I had a can of Plasti Dip in my hands, thought I'd try something, and a few coats later I hate the bumper very slightly less. :)

    IMG_1876.jpg
I tried to rig an awning using an old tarp and some PVC pipe, but this setup as shown can't handle even the slightest breeze.

    IMG_2543.jpg
By putting the poles upright and staking them out it works slightly better, but I think my next "big" purchase will be a proper awning.

    IMG_1869.jpg
I still need to work out my storage situation, since this is a little messy and cramped for my taste, but I'm getting there.

    IMG_2408.jpg
And, more importantly, I'm getting "out there"!

Didn't know if you ever got your floor mats situated, but I have a suggestion. Use a hair dryer or a heat gun if you have one and heat up the sections that do not lay correctly. Then mold them while taking your time not to melt them and change the texture. Once they are where you would like, lay something with some weight over the re-worked section. In theory it should harden back up into the shape you prefer, or at least close to the shape you are going for!

I have done this a couple times with the wife's mini van weather techs. Also with kydex gun holsters, but that's a different animal all together :) Just used a good hair dryer and patience!

BTW, nice Tundra! Extremely clean. Love all the functional mods you have done!

Ah, I like that idea. I had resigned myself to the gaps - only idea I had was to put some sort of adhesive behind them - velcro tabs - to hold the gaps closed, but I like your idea much better. And I just got a heat gun, in fact, so I'll give it a go! I'll try to remember to report back with before/after shots.

BTW, my Tundra is no longer nearly as clean as when I bought it, since I have used it for my intended purposes: getting out there and off the pavement. I haven't done any major damage, but it has plenty of desert pinstriping, mud everywhere, and that non-matching shell with a DIY rack on it. Pretty sure the previous owner would have a heart attack if he saw it. It was pristine when I got it, despite being 15 years old and having 95K miles on it at the time.

Sounds good. Just take your time!

And at least you’re using it like a truck! These 1st gen tundras are amazing for exactly what you’re doing, good for you IMHO! Still great looking to me and incredibly functional!!!

And something I always say too >:itllbuffout:! Same applies to your tundra! Haha wear those marks as badges of honor, I’m sure each one has a story!

Looks like it has been a while since I updated this build page. Changes in the past few months:

    -New tires: BFG KO2 235/85R16
    -ARB awning on the back
    -Ghetto-rigged some roof boxes
-General re-org of the roof rack stuff.
-Electrical outlets in the camper shell
-Changed out some interior lights for LEDs
-Changed headlights to Beamtech LEDs. Not happy so far.
-Got a loaner drone for some aerial shots :)

Current sleeping setup. Unfold the sleeping pads and pull the sleeping bag out of the black and yellow tub. (I still get a lot of dust in the shell, so I keep stuff in tubs as much as I can.) Food and cook gear is in the big drawer. Water in jugs on the right. The other black box on the right is a portable darkroom for photography.

Clothes are in the cab, as is the cooler, books, maps, camera gear.

    DJI_0237.jpg

Recovery gear, tools, spare fuel, more water, shovel, and awning is on the roof.

Nice job on rigging your truck the way you want it. Deserts are beautiful places. You run into any Shaman out there?

That "gap" in your last photo fit the edge of my console perfectly. It looks to me like you have the extended console that goes all the way from the seat to the up under the dash. I do not. My cup holders are in the edge of the seat, and I have carpet between my seat and the underside of my dash.
