Thank you everyone. I really appreciate the help.

I'll consider this thread done for now and will update once I get the fenders.

    A couple take aways:

Don't paint in direct sunlight. I believe this was my biggest mistake on the hood and it's what caused me to have a very uneven first coat. I got the best results painting the roof of the truck and it was literally right under the florescent light in the garage. I got a nice even glossy coat on the roof without any clear coat.

Hanging your piece vertical is not always best but may work for you. I got runs on the hood when I painted it when it was hanging.

I don't know why Rustoleum said they don't recommend clear coat on top of this paint. I used 2K clear on the doors and half of the hood. I sprayed it on shortly after the spraying the final top coat. I got good results from what I can see. It needs some wet sanding and buffing to even it out but otherwise it's fine.

Test your cans. Test the spray pattern before doing anything. I painted the doors last and by that time I had enough practice to get good results. This helped me figure out the correct distance needed to hold off from the piece. Too close and you'll get runs.. too far you won't get a wet enough coat. Even with my shaky hands once I finally got to the doors I had a better feel for how far away I needed to hold the cans and how quickly I needed to move. I learned that I had to look at the area in front of and behind where I was spraying (and not focusing on just the spot the paint was hitting). That kept me on the right path.
Move your body and not your hand/ arms. This will help keep the spray can at the same distance the entire time.

I ran into issues with goobers dripping from the can when trying to paint things laying flat, so that's one advantage that I could see to painting the pieces vertically or hanging. As far as the 2k over Rust-Oleum/other enamels, I read that it's fine to do but you should give plenty of time for the base coat to off-gas fully... I don't know if that's going to cause any issues or if it's just a precautionary thing. Looks great though, and it's been a good thread to follow.

Yeah I got a couple of those on the doors. I think that was an issue with the can/ nozzle thought. But you have a very valid point. I think ideally it would have been nice to have the pieces sitting at about a 45* angle to the floor. Then the paint can wouldn’t have to be completely parallel with the ground.

Hmm. Well only time will tell.

Thanks for following and supporting.

Fenders are finally done. Truck is put back together and ready to wheel.
I skipped the clear coat on the fenders. I was able to get a nice even glossy finish with the paint alone so I was happy.
Overall the paint makes the truck a 10 footer, in my opinion. Very happy with everything.
Thank you again everyone for your help!

Personally, I would sign the body panels like a famous painter would. That would get hours of enjoyment.
Turned out really good. Can’t wait to see the hulk hit the trails.

    Hmm that’s an interesting thought.
My friend is making me vinyl decals to replace the door emblems in yellow.
It’ll say “TOYOTA_Tacoma” and 4 Wheel Drive right under it on each of the doors. Truck has been renamed John from Billy.

    Thank you!

Of course the Jeep guy would post pictures of his Jeep winching Toyota’s.:p

Actually, I was just pulling him over to change tires. He lost 3 beads that day. Wheeled just fine.

I’ve been on runs and seen similar issues. Reminds me to always go prepared.
And I’ve also been “that guy” once or twice. When this truck was still IFS I broke both front CV axles on Clawhammer right after the plaque. Then I busted a bead while getting pulled out. It was already a long night and that made it worse. We didn’t get back to the lakebed until the sun started coming back.

How is that Krylon paint holding up? We painted some dog agility equipment with both Rustolem and Krylon, and there are two things I noticed.
    1) The Krylon went on much thinner than the Rustolem.
    2) The Krylon is almost completely faded after 2 years and the Rustolem is still the same bright colors as when we painted.
I wonder since you coated it if it did any good. Sad my first post on this forum was about that. I bought my first Tundra this month. I just wish it had a stick!

I came across this because the PO tore one of the back plastic bumper covers and I'm looking to order one from Toyota, but they just told me I have to paint the darn thing. I'm sure the dealer would do it for lots of $$.
