Went and checked it out today since I had time to kill after our project in Houston.

Short summery would be, much better than Pearl Harbor but not as good as Tora Tora Tora.

Last movie I went to I walked out of so I've turned into that crusty old guy who can't stand to see movies in the theater. I didn't know they extended the preview time to 30 freakin minutes.

I liked movie over all, it follows mostly Edwin Layton who was intel officer in the Navy who predicted, or warned about Pearl Harbor. Also followed is Dick Best, if you're a history buff like I am you already know who this guy is. Who he was NOT was Maverick from Top Gun, that's who they portrayed him as. I don't know why Hollywood has to do this to these historical characters, their real stories are far better than what they make up.

The movie starts about 1937 with Layton acting as US Navy envoy to Japan and his relationship with Yamamoto then leads up to Pearl, Battle of Coral Sea, Doolittle Raid all leading up to the battle of Midway.

The CGI is cartoonish but I guess they have to do it like that to attract the video gamer generation. Tora Tora Tora flight scenes were more accurate but not as action packed as the CGI stuff.

One thing really bugged me was all the officers' uniforms looked like they have been slept in and was badly fitted. I guess it's the USAF Vet in me, I'm looking at 35-10 and saying these guys are out of spec. Even they guys in Washington looked like crap.

And I'm sorry, I could not get passed my prejudice seeing "Woody" playing Nimitz, just didn't work for me but what do I know. He's a fine actor i'm sure but I just always see "Woody". Dennis Quaid doing Halsey was great!

Historically it's a lot closer than what the older Midway movie was, goes after some little known story lines that hasn't been touched on. They showed Hollywood director John Ford on Midway doing his filming and getting wounded while screaming "Keep Filming!".

One thing that was missing i think was the efforts that they went through trying to locate the attacking fleet.

I enjoyed seeing the B26 depicted in early attack on the Jap Fleet, not many realize the Marauder's made attacks fitted with torpedoes. But I didn't see one story about the fighters.

At least Charlton Heston isn't in it flying 4 different types of aircraft on the final mission.

    I'd give it 4 out of 5.

Nice recap and agree on all fronts.

Tora Tora Tora was the best IMO too.

I did notice that about the uniforms

Pearl Harbor with Afflec did suck, agree with you there.

Too much history that happened for a 2 hour movie so I feel like it didn’t go deep enough as to how, when and why things happened. I know the movie was not about Pearl Harbor, the they cut in/out of the attack which lost its impact (even tho we all know the details and have seen history documentaries etc).

Overall it was a good movie and would say 3.8 of 5. I wasn’t emotional after the movie which I normally am. So didn’t tug on the heart strings.

Yeah, I mean even in "From Here to Eternity" they were able to keep focus on the battle.

You know what got me chocked up? the preview for "Richard Jewel". Personally remembering how badly that guy got screwed over by the government and the press just brought out some emotion. Clint Eastwood movie so out of 30 minutes of previews, that's one movie I'll see (when I can stream it).

I saw an ad for it. Looks like great production values but how many movies does this battle really need (even though it was the turning point of the Pacific war.)

Richard Jewel does look really good. Most people only remember him being a suspect, not many know what was done to him.

I'll probably wait until it goes to streaming, too. I was lucky enough to watch John Ford's documentary at the movie house on Midway Atoll in 2004 (Lived there until 2008, as a firefighter for Henderson airfield). Living there really got me into the history of the Pacific theater. Fantastic experience.

Like @COMiamiFan said, so much in that sequence of events can't really be fit in 2 hours. Especially when you gotta throw a love story in it. I'm all for historically based movies being made.

I mean how many times do we have to have the Star Wars story told (Nothing new in any of them, just different people) or some superhero movie("I"m a Superhero, don't mess with me." "I"m so conflicted...I can't do anything right." "Oh I'm a Superhero again, look out, I'm kickin' ass").

And to think that little spit of land was what they were fighting over.
