Our resident vets are awesome. My dog ate a slice of onion while my back was turned for 60 seconds. Sent a PM and got a response before I got too worried and went to the emergency vet. @jaredmillerdvm thanks much!

Hey guys I have a question. We have a 7 yr old Jack Russell. In Sept he was put on Apoquel for bad skin allergies. He had to be sedated because he wouldn't let anyone touch or muzzle him. At that time he had a minor ear infection that they treated. In the last several days he has been shaking his head and we can see and smell the discharge in his right ear. I called the vet and they had us come pick up Pattotic drops but he wont let us get near him. We dont want to lose any fingers. What suggestions do you have or does this come in a pill form? We tried to get better pics but he wont let us touch his ear. Thank you.

Our practice actually uses a thick, lanolin based medication called EKT. It's a combined steroid/antibiotic/antifungal medication that you put in the ear and leave alone. Over 14 days it soaks into the ear canal skin. The owner doesn't need to treat at home. Some infections need a second treatment in 14 days. Works VERY well. We get ours compounded by Wedgewood Pharmacy. See if your vet can order some. EKT is Enrofloxacin/Ketoconazole/Triamcinolone.

Thanks. I will look into it. Sounds like we will have to take him in either way since he wont let us touch him. I would assume he feels pain or achiness all through his body?

Deep ear infections are really painful, and I think it causes distress more than anything, which can certainly augment any minor aches and pains. Sometimes just giving Benadryl will take the edge off, or buffered aspirin. For a dog his size, he could get 2 adult Benadryl tablets or 2 aspirin twice a day until you can get back to the vet.

Yes, yes and yes. Mine paid out over $25k over the course of my dogs life - I always thought I’d have the conviction to put fiscal responsibility in front of an animal but nope... I didn’t.. and then when my wife was on the scene... no way we’d have let anything happen to that dog is there was still money in our account.

If you end up paying the premium and never claiming - be thankful you had a wonderful life with your pet. Worth it for peace of mind at least and this is the guy that NEVER buys warranties, etc, etc. I’ve seen one too many ‘go fund me’ things set up for some dude who blew $15k on his credit card trying to save a cat.

and my recommendation would be embrace - stellar company

Taking my wife's cocker spaniel to vet tomorrow.

He acts like he is sore [joints/arthritis], all of a sudden, MUCH more than normal. [He doesn't have big problems like that typically.]

We think he may have a fever.

Is there a home remedy we can give him to help him until tomorrow? He weighs 23-25 pounds, depending upon what time of year we weigh him.

    Muchas gracias.

Thanks. I have the regular 200mg orange motrin. Can I give him 1 of those? He weighs 23 lbs. I ran into one of the vet techs from his vet's office at my son's martial arts class. I told her what is going on and that he wont let us go near him to put the drops in. She said they have something similar to EKT.....Ocerna or something like that. She is going to pull his chart in the morning and discuss it with the dr.

I would not recommend Motrin. I would use approx 100mg of aspirin instead. Osurnia is good but needs to be repeated in 7 days then it will last up to 45 days. They will have to muzzle and clean the ears first before applying.

My 18 year old cat went blind last week. Her mom lived to be 23. She had diabetes I think it runs in family. Ex put the cat on dry food at about 6. In hindsight that was probably a bad move but mom had not been diagnosed with diabetes at that time. Also I was not aware that cats really should not eat a lot of carbs. Wild cats are meat eaters. Cat is 18 and has had a good life.

    @jaredmillerdvm and @Kerch71:

Our vet gave my wife's 27 pound dog 57 mg a day of Previcox to suppress pain due to inflammation in his back.

The dog has to be medicated because his suffering is so great without medication that we would have to put him down.

It's a miracle drug. Dog is completely normal after taking it.

Here's the problem: we're supposed to give one dose per day, but it quits suppressing pain after 16 hours, and he begins shivering again, arching his back, and whimpering some. His behavior at that time mark does NOT suggest that he is in the same, full-blown level of pain that he was originally suffering from prior to being dosed, but it's obviously wearing off at that point, maybe 50% effective. He still has quality of life at this time mark.

Question: what is the effect of giving him the next, daily dose 8 hours early [at the 16 hour mark]? Or 4 hours early at the 20 hour mark?

We have to leave the house for a little bit this morning [self-employed, duty calls], but we can monitor his behavior over a full 24 hour span tomorrow, if that would help.

My concern is that I do not want to negatively effect his kidney function and shorten his life that way. T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U!

What did the vet think was wrong with his back? Disk problem?

Unfortunately, you can't really go any higher than the current dosage. What I've found helpful is to use Previcox with Methocarbamol (a muscle relaxer) or Gabapentin. Adding either one of these will likely give longer relief.

Right on @Kerch71! gabapentin 100mg for addition pain control every 8-12 hrs. Methocarbamol if needed.

Vet said he had disk [compression?] problems that caused an enzyme(?) to be created that causes pain to let the animal know to 'chill'.

[He actually gave me like a 15 minute tutorial because he knows my family and that I have some advanced degrees, but as I am recovering from a recent concussion, I am STUPID and can't remember anything.:D:notsure:]

I will talk to my vet about the two medications you mentioned. VERY helpful to know what considerations to proffer.:bowdown:

Hey quick question for you and @jaredmillerdvm . So he is going to the vet at 10 AM tommorow to get the Osurnia treatment for his ear infection. The vet gave us a 25mg Acepromazine tablet for him to take 3/4 of it 2 hours before his appointment so that they can muzzle him. He had the same pill 2 hrs before his last appointment for his skin irritation and he still tried to nip them. After returning home and a few hours after the appointment he was out of it. My question is can I give it to him earlier than 2 hours so that we can try to bathe him? We haven't tried yet because of his ear pain. As a reminder he is a 23 lb Jack Russell. Thanks.

You could try giving it earlier than 2 hours, but he may still be "with it" enough to nip once he is at the vet. Once adrenaline goes up at the vet's office, many dogs can overcome acepromazine enough to nip, and then they become sedate again once they are at home and don't feel threatened. You may never be able to completely control his aggression with acepromazine. I usually try Trazadone first for aggressive tendancies because adrenaline easily makes acepromazine ineffective. Speak with your vet about alternatives to acepromazine.

You can. Typically it takes about an hour or so to kick in. You have to trick him and make sure he doesn't realize anything is going on. I think no matter how early you give it, he will be quite sedate most of the day.

I agree with @Kerch71 but usually add gabapentin with the trazadone, +/- ace with both of them for aggressive dogs.

He is only aggressive when he is in pain or has an injury.....not a daily or common aggression.

I gotcha. But I bet he still gets ramped up simply by walking into the vet's office. I would probably just stick to 2 hours before. The Osurna takes a second to put in his ears. They can muzzle him if needed. I agree, though. Pain makes our pets unpredictable. Can you bathe him at home afterwards, or were you having the vet's office do it?

Oh yeah...he was pretty mad when they tried to muzzle him...took about 5 or 6 times.....growled and nipped the whole time. He wanted no part of that. Anyway, he had the infection in both ears, but the right one was pretty bad. She was worried that it might be one of those infections that is hard to get rid of (I can't remember what it was called) and that it may require daily drops which he won't let us do. She did say that there are oral antibiotics but they don't work that well because the don't get fully into the ears. He got the first Osurna treatment today and will get the 2nd one next Monday. She is hoping that those treatments take care of it.
