Well it's that time of year again and this year has been really crazy so far. I live in Santa Clarita and Thursday was pretty scary. This was the first time the fire had been the closest to our area and I watched as it spread from a small fire to 400 acres in a couple of hours. The winds were cruel with gust up to 50 mph. Our backyard sky started turning black real quick and for the first time, I told my wife to start packing up all the documents and precious things that cannot be replaced. I only caught the beginning of the fire as seen below but even with us about 10 miles away we could see the smoke coming over our mountains in the backyard.

In any case, thank goodness all worked out ok for us but for all the families displaced, it's just so heartbreaking to see. With the situation getting worse in Northern California, I commend all the firefighters and police for all the hard work they do. I live really close to Central Park, which is the biggest park in Santa Clarita and where they always create the command center and staging hub every year when it gets real bad. I took my son to go see all the fire trucks and engines because its such an awesome site to see. I can tell you I got teary eyed as all the engines took off early Saturday morning from the park and telling my son (who of course, wants to be a firefighter since he was 3) the enormous logistics involved with all the neighboring fire counties. The engines have the city names on the side and we saw: Fullerton, West Covina, Anaheim, New Port Beach, Ventura engines driving out in all unison as all cars stopped traffic to let them out of the park. It was an amazing site to see. I just wanted to express my enormous gratitude for all firefighters and law enforcement that risk their lives for all of us.

And this is the view of the Sylmar Fire about 3 weeks ago from our backyard (unfortunate this is a common nighttime shot for us every year now):

Yeah, my daughter lives in North Hollywood ... I totally get it. California needs to quit spending money on green projects and start investing in fire prevention programs [removing underbrush around certain places, etc. whatever the right prescription is]. Blessings, truly:amen:

One of the reasons I got my truck was in case I need to evacuate. Last year one of the fires here was stopped 7 miles from my house. I could fit a lot of stuff in my Corolla but I can save a lot more with the Tundra

We’re a mile away from Porter Ranch Fire with about a half mile of dry brush. Go bags, documents were set for deployment. My wife and I took shifts and watch the progress whether we needed to evacuate or not.

    Being prepared definitely helped.

as @tinman10101 says, Thank you for the for the responders.
