Wife got me a new 2015 Toyota Tundra SR5 last year for our 30th anniversary. I LOVE THE TRUCK! I was looking at Tacoma's and she talked me into the Tundra and I never looked back.

Anyways - I have noticed that when in 4 wheel drive it seems to suck a LOT of gas. I can literally watch the gauge go down. It is an 8 mile drive from home to my shop and today I decided to actually pay attention to it. The gas gauge dropped about 1/16th of the scale in an 8 mile drive in 4WD!. There was about 2" of snow, not really a cause for 4x4'ing, and I normally only use it "as needed", but just was curious about the fuel economy - is that normal?

Why are AWD's so much more fuel efficient? does it have anything to do with the torque delivered to each wheel?

    Thanks!

I'm not mechanically gifted enough to answer your question to the extend that you asked, but I will be able to confirm the following...

4x4 - much more fun at the sure cost to fuel drop.
We had a decent storm here last night and on my way home through the back roads, I thought it just safer to use the 4x vs keeping her in 2x, and the needle surely came down a bit quicker. That's an hour drive though over a 20km roughly distant drive home.

The AWD will be more efficient probably given the fact that it isn't always in AWD mode. It's more dynamic now and controlled by the computer, applied when needed. At least the new ones aren't. Going back a few years I believe most AWD sucked on gas due to they did always have to have all wheels being powered.

    Maybe because they aren't 5500lbs?

Welcome to the Tundra neighborhood ! You are transferring HP and torque to twice as much drive line. So yes, the use in 4x4 will tip the gauge quicker. Just go light on the throttle when possible.

AWD CUV's are already unibody so they weigh much less. Plus they're usually FWD biased with most power going to the front until slippage is detected.

Well, yeah that's probably part of it.

Awesome Anniversary gift! I miss my Tacoma in a sense that I wish I could have kept it, but I definitely like the Tundra more for the added space. Congrats on the truck and about the 4x4, like others said, more work for the engine, more gas to burn through.

I'll have to wait until the weather breaks. I've put a bed step on it and recently a BAK flip Tonneau cover and I am getting ready to mount a LED light bar inside the upper grill.
I'll do a Video on that!
