The other Tacoma forum I’m on has been dying slowly for a couple years and I’m on this site almost every day so I figured I would share my Tacoma build.
    It is a 1999 single cab 2.7L 5spd.
As of today it has 245k miles. The engine is stock except for the 01+ mini header. The transmission was replaced at 190k due to bad 3rd and 5th synchros. I have owned it for 10.5 years now. It was stock when I got it. I slowly built it up as I started wheeling harder and harder trails. I used to live in Southern California and while there I drove the truck anywhere I could to go wheeling. It’s been to Moab twice, table Mesa and Florence junction, the Rubicon, the hammers, Big Bear and many more places.
I was once dubbed the King of IFS because I took the truck anywhere on IFS and 35’s.

I solid axle swapped the truck in 2014. I was tired of breaking CV shafts. They just weren’t up to snuff for 35’s. I wanted to go more places and spend less time fixing it and more time wheeling. So far that’s been the case. It had 37’s on it right after the swap and finally I went to 40’s this year.

Mods include the solid axle swap up front with a 67” WMS diamond axle running an 8” high pinion 5.29 with a grizzly locker, chromo shafts, 25mm steering pin kit, and IFS hubs with stock Tacoma brakes. I have a crawl box with a 4.7 low range gear (trail gear adapters and gear) held in place with a trail gear dual case crossmember. The rear end is an ECGS built 8.4” with 5.29’s and a welded lockright. Stock rear housing. 6” rear springs, 4” front springs. Bilstein 5125’s all around (14” front and 12” rear). Custom front and rear bumpers and 4xinnovations sliders with chain steps. The bed was bobbed 10”.
All of this sits on 40” Cooper STT Pros with Procomp Proxy series 45 fake locks.

Currently the truck is undergoing a bit of a transformation.
Back on Memorial Day I rolled the truck and trashed the A-pillar. I was lucky as hell that I walked away without a scratch. The truck did it’s job protecting me and I even drove it home immediately afterwards.

I finally managed to located a new cab last month.
I’ve been wanting a flat bed for a while so now that the bedsides were messed up from the roll I cut it up and recycled all of it minus the bed sides and tailgate. After the cab swap is done I plan on fabbing up a tube based flat bed with removable bedsides, mounting a bench seat in the bed and doing an exo cage to protect the body and the passengers.

The cab has been sitting and waiting while I’ve been helping some friends get their rigs ready for an event this weekend.

    (Last month)

So in preparation for the new cab I needed to pull the transfercases and re-seal the adapters. I cut the floor out and borrowed an engine hoist so I can get it out from the top.
    Before:

    After

The new cab is black but I like green better.
I decided to use John Deere green in a spray can.
So far I have prepped the hood. Tomorrow I will prep the doors and fenders and lay down some color Sunday.
Here was a test spray I laid down on the hood to test different primers.

And here is the hood after 12 hours of prep. It had tons of hail damage that I didn’t know about until last night.

I will update more as I progress through the cab swap.

Love this! The fear of snapping CVs is the only thing stopping me from running 35s. I'm slowly collecting parts for a SAS.
P.S. Can we get a pic of that Diamond axle?

It’s said that the Tacoma shafts were stronger than pre Tacoma IFS shafts. To be honest I didn’t break a shaft for like the first 2 or 3 years after putting a locker in the front IFS diff. The lockright failed and became stuck “locked” and after that it was game over on my CV’s. I also believe that having a manual transmission and the ability to cut the power to the drivetrain with the clutch pedal also helped save the CV’s for those first few years.

And yeah, I don’t know how i forgot this pic. It’s probably my favorite picture to date.

Sometimes I'm tempted to put a Spartan in the front diff and just call it good. I have one in the rear and it was fairly easy to install. My biggest issue with IFS is that as soon as I lift a front tire, I'm basically 2wd. IMG_2443.PNG.jpg

That’s exactly why I locked the front end. I think a stock truck could go damn near anywhere with lockers front and rear. I did however add a twin stick shifter on the transfercase when I put the locker in the front. That way I could have 2WD low range and could maneuver on the trail more easily between obstacles. It helped a lot with steering and I feel like it helped saved the CV axles from extra abuse.

This obstacle would have been almost impossible without a front locker.

Also here’s a video from about a year ago when the truck was still on 37’s. This is Wolf Caves in Mason, Texas. One of my favorite places.

Now we know how Pucker Pass got so narrow! I definitely need to go to 4.7s and eventually dual t/c.

I got the cab home today and laid down a few light coats of primer.
Currently only painting the A and B pillars, Rockers, back of the cab and the roof. That way on Monday it will be ready for my friends to swap it on to the frame.

Tomorrow morning I will sand the primer and lay on some color. Between coats I will start prepping the hood, doors and fenders as well as get the crawl box and transfercase put back in.
Wish me luck. Paint has never been my strong suit.

Cab is painted. Hood is sitting in primer waiting for sanding and color (have to wait another hour). Transfer cases are back in put on finger tight waiting the 1 hour for the RTV to set up before torquing it down.

I’m going to lay down clear coat on the rockers today but wait the required 48 hours before clear coating the rest of the cab. My sliders would block access to the rockers and the cab is getting swapped tomorrow.
I may start prep on the doors today or I may not. Haven’t really decided but I’m pretty exhausted.
Also found out that I have 1 4Runner front fender and 1 Tacoma front fender so.. I’m going to put those off for now until I get another fender.

The new cab is on and bolted in place. Now begins the arduous process of putting everything back together.

The old cab came off very easily thanks to all the weight that was missing from the back wall and roof. Aside from that the weight was more evenly distributed towards the firewall.
The weight of the complete new cab ends up being further back towards the rear wall. Not a big deal.

I haven’t done any more paint work yet.
I think I’m going to focus more on putting everything back together and just paint the doors as time allows. I had to order more paint. I went through almost 5 cans already. Hopefully I can do it all with 10 cans total.

The inside of the truck is starting to look more like a truck.
I struggled today looking for a vent for 30 mins. Putting in and taking out the reinforcement bar 3 or 4 times. Trying to figure out how the climate control cables are supposed to be ran.. couldn’t figure out why the OBD2 port was landing under the glove box.. Jeez. I should have taken more pictures during disassembly.

I think it would have been easier to leave the interior in tact on the old cab until the new cab was on the frame. Then I could have moved piece by piece over and I wouldn’t have had any memory lapse.

    Bonus of this entire swap?
The new cab came with the entire AC system intact and charged. The AC compressor bolted up A-ok to my engine. My idler pulley is seized so I haven’t had AC since 2010 or so. The lines on my old cab/ system were busted, too. Which is part of the reason I never fixed it. However, now with a new pulley, I theoretically should be able to have the system function 100% no problem.

Tomorrow I will try to button up the dash. I need to clean the maf sensor and repair a bracket that busted from the engine. I also need to cut out the floor for the twin stick shifters. I’m a bit leery of that because I butchered my last attempt on my previous cab and got plenty of exhaust fumes in the cab.
The battery is being moved (again) to right behind the cab on the drivers side. I think my lines are long enough from the previous battery relocation. Fingers crossed.

Today I got the dash back in but left the rest of the trim off for now in case I have to go back in for diagnostics if it doesn’t start.
I then got the idler pulley for the AC replaced. That was easy. What wasn’t easy was swapping pulleys from my old compressor to the new one. Something I didn’t know I was going to have to do. The V6 compressor has a 5.25” pulley and the 4Cyl has a 4” pulley. Rather than dealing with a custom sized belt I opted to swap the pulleys. Hope I didn’t mess anything up.
I got the air box back in and moved the battery. I hung the battery box off of the frame and made a support to the slider.
All but one of the old wires were long enough from the last relocation. I didn’t have a terminal to make the new battery to engine/ body ground cable. It was 2am or else I would have just ran out and got one.
I planned to have it running first thing this morning and painting the hood in the warmth of the garage but obviously that didn’t happen.
Didn’t help that I had a 5 hour lapse because of Halloween. Oh well. Hopefully it’ll be running first thing in the morning.

How is the wheeling down there? My queen has a really good friend in Austin....she would fly, I would drive.

    Big nope. :p

I had a neighbor stop by the other day and started talking to me about my “Jeep.” I gave him a pass for calling it such a bad word because, and only because, he said he has a tube bender in his garage and wouldn’t mind letting me use it.
Trust me. It won’t be a jungle gym. Just a classy exo.

Pretty decent. Both Wolf Caves and Katemcy 2 are less than 2 hours drive (and right next to each other, really cool). Rocks on rocks like you see in that video.
Here’s a buddy of mine at Katemcy 2.

Then there’s hidden falls which has plenty of rocks but it’s also frequented by lots of UTV and single track riders. It’s an hour away. It’s plenty fun but gets boring if you go too many times in a season. It can also turn in to a mud fest depending on weather.

They’re all expensive. I miss wheeling on public land.

Haha. I was going to a local wheeling park one Saturday, had to stop at local parts store to get a piece of fuel line, to run for my fuel cell breather. Well they have it in the back, the dip shit behind the counter ask was it for the jeep. I turned my head as if I didn't hear him, he said sir, is it for the jeep. I said I thought you were talking to someone else, I don't own a jeep, that's a Toyota. In a smart ass tone. It amazes me how people see a off-road rig and always assumes it's a damn Jeep.

No muffler currently. I have a gutted cat so what you hear is just straight piped. I have a resonator from a V6 Gallant I use as a muffler. I just haven’t yet added it back in. I had to run a crossover from the right side to the left side because I moved the gas tank from the left side to the right side.

It will be some time before I get the cage done. I’m thinking I will be able to afford the tube with my Christmas bonus.
Still lots of odds and ends to finish up before I even think of adding anything else anyway.
And thank you for the invite. I’ve got tons of friends up there and thus, lots of couches to crash on if I head that way. I know there’s great wheeling there so I’m sure I’ll find my way there sooner or later.

Pulled an all nighter last night to finish getting the truck road worthy. Haven’t slept since 10am yesterday. I found out yesterday our 3rd car, the grandmas special 97 Camry, decided to start spewing oil. Found out today, after getting the truck going, that it’s leaking from the cam seal. Just before I was planning on doing the timing belt and water pump.

    Anyway, last night:
Spent a lot of time very carefully cutting the hole for both shifters. The rear case twin stick shifter hole took the longest time. I didn’t want to mess this one up.
I use a little hack when cutting sheet metal like this. I drill small holes at the corners of the square shaped hole I want to cut. Then I use my angle grinder and stay very shallow in the metal and starting in the middle between the holes. Then you can basically just sink the angle grinder down further and further until you hit both holes.

After that I had to mount the radiator (which took almost an hour because the brackets were tweaked), mount the power steering cooler and fill & bleed the power steering system, swap some evap lines that got mixed, find and fix a short in the left side tail light wiring, change the engine oil and filter, bolt up the front drive shaft, mount the left seat, bleed the clutch line.. and lots of other things I’m forgetting.

But, I was able to drive it to a meeting at my fellowship this morning around 9. Everything felt good but the power steering system wasn’t bled enough and it puked a metric boat load of fluid as I shut down the engine. Made it home fine.
Everything appears to be working 100% now.
Still plenty of odds and ends like finish installing the interior, wire the winch back up, complete the exhaust, paint the doors, etc..

I’ll get some good pictures of the outside of the truck tomorrow. Paint looks good out in the sun.
