I installed a block heater in my last truck(2010F150) and am looking to do the same with my Tundra.

Who out there has installed one and what type was it( cartridge, threaded, freeze plug)?

I have found what I think is one for my truck according to Phillips & Temro's website (zerostat 3100129), but it says its a "cartridge type". From what I have read, it means that it sits in an empty hole in the block casting with no contact with engine coolant. Does this work well? I would think that heating up the coolant would be more efficient, but if this works im willing to give it a try.

I guess I should mention that my previous truck had a freeze plug type heater that did come into contact with engine coolant. That is why I am sceptacle about the cartridge type heater.

Toyota has a stock one that goes in a hole on the lower drivers side. I’ll look for the part #. Its pretty easy to install, takes about 5 min. It heats the block directly, not the coolant.

I have one like this. It has a heat conductive slop that you also put in the hole to transfer heat. It works well and there's no chance of a coolant leak. :p It takes longer to run the power cord than to install the element itself. I haven't really looked, are there even frost plugs on these engines? o_O

When searching this part number, the only result I could find is in eBay. In the description it says that it's a "Toyota of Canada block heater". This should still work, right? It also says it doesn't come with instructions. Do you have a pic of where this plugs into or any other info? Thanks

Once you see the hole you can’t unsee it.

I’ll take a pic next time I can get under my truck. I think Toyota USA stopped selling them. They aren’t even an option. I bought one in 2010 locally. Had to order a Canadian one off eBay for my 2018. It’s the same thing. I believe it’s also still an option in Canada, like remote start and dash cam that we don’t get.

At $75 off eBay I may just get the Zerostart heater off Amazon. Thanks to all of the helpful information and if I can convince the CFO of the house that its a necessity I will update with pics!

In 2018 I bought my 2015 SR5 here in Michigan although it came out of Quebec. Has a Toyota block heater already installed.
At what temps do those of you with these plug them in to heat your block?
Please respond in Fahrenheit... don't make me do any math.....thanks...

On my ford I would plug it in when the overnight temps dropped below 40 degrees F. I had the heater plugged into a timer that would let the heater run for 4 hours prior to me leaving for work.

I'm sure some plug them in only when it drops below 32 degrees F but it sure is nice to get in the truck and have heat instantly when the engine is started, even on above freezing temp days.

Honestly, here when your going to get into single digits and below zero, then plug it in. Other than that I feel it's just a waste of electricity.

I'm more in line with this, unless the truck is parked at work and they're paying for the juice. 20°F is when I begin to think about it.

I had one of the old type that went into the freeze plug when I had my good old SR5 T-100. We only had a 1 car garage and I had to park the truck outside at home and the fire station and I liked the idea of a block heater. The truck only took a few miles to blow warm air even on zero degree nights. Also, the heat from the coolant would go through the defroster and partially defrost the windshield. After 15 years I bought a Tacoma and used the cartridge type of block heater when I was at work since we had moved into a house with a two car garage. The cartridge was very easy to install and I believe I had to order it from Canada.
Here are a couple of pictures I took through our Thermal imaging camera at work after a cold night and the block was at 42 degrees which isnt all that bad.

No sir, we do not sell block heaters. Being in the south, we don't really need them. :D

I'm pretty sure most northern dealers would either be able to get them or can acquire them.

I normally plug in around -4F (-20C). I've gone beyond that without too much trouble but the car can also struggle to start at temperatures above that and you know you're being hard on the battery, starter, etc. If I were you, I would consider just plugging in any time it gets below 0F for simplicity.

Edit: looking at the responses above, I tend to laugh at the folks I see who plug in at 30F unless they have really old cars with weak batteries.

They're mandatory in Canada vehicles from what I know

We try to plug in when it hits about -15c or 5f or so, if I remember. Regardless, I let the vehicle warm up 5min or so when it's winter as wind chill usually makes it feel much colder.

My rule of thumb is....if it's outdoor hockey weather, the vehicle doesn't need to be plugged in. That's usually -20c or -4c

I had my dealer install mine last year. Works great. Since I live in SE pa, Toyota didnt list it as a part available for the dealer in my area. So the tech was smart and ordered the block heater threw a dealer in Canada and had it shipped to pa. The tech said Toyota is funny with what parts are available for different regions.

No worries.... That was the place. As it turns out, you can put too much of the heat conductive grease in the hole. I had to scrape most of it back out for the heater to fit in. You were right, it took longer to route the cord than it did to install the heater. heres to warm mornings in the near future!

I only run a block heater on diesels, and only when it drops to negative numbers. New injection engines don't need them until you start getting into the negative double digits. And even then, a battery blanket adds more value. Just my 2 cents. Btw, this morning it was -3, started right up.
