Can't understand the pricing on the new trucks

Hey guys -- What kind of discounts are you seeing on 2020 1794s? The leftover 2019s are going for $44,000 (sometimes less) after the $3,000 rebate which is now only $1,000. Add that to the $44,000 you get to about $46,000 plus the $1,100 price increase for 2020 over 2019. So now we're talking $47,100.

Best pricing I'm seeing is just under $50,000. If you bought a 1794 recently, what was your experience?

Just like the massive inflation in home prices over the last 20 years.

After 9/11, the govt was so worried about economic collapse that we decided to make money cheap to keep purchasing up.

This was addictive though, it is impossible to cut off credit to people after you have them used to it. So people have massively increased their demand for expensive goods due to the low rate, long term loans available for everything.

If you went back to 2005 and told someone that in the future people would buy cell phones on a lease to own loan they would slap you for being crazy.

Nobody bought a car with a 7 or 8 year loan in the 90’s. Today it is commonplace. Automakers just raised the prices to account for this insanity

Thanks for your reply, but I was not trying to understand why pricing of trucks is at the levels they are today. I am trying to understand why the dealers are asking for so much more for a 2020 than a 2019, after taking into account the lower rebate and the slightly higher MSRP.

With a completely revised new Tundra on the horizon, it is really hard to justify the likely huge depreciation hit anyone will absorb when the new model is introduced. Despite that, dealers are asking for large margins over invoice right now.

I waited and bought my 2016 when 17's were out and supposedly you can get a better deal on the "older" model ... if there is such a thing! lol
Also they fix the issues with later models. I try not to buy a first year car with major redesigns. They rush to get it out ... and after a year or two they fine-tune it.

I don’t think there’s quite the “huge depreciation” on tundras you may think...even with a new model out. Have you seen the prices for 1st gen still? You’re buying more reliability than you’re buying features. I’ve got the paperwork from my trucks first owner, he paid $55k for a 10’ platinum off the lot...few add ons...

    A couple of thoughts:

First, dealers are quoting $3,000 more for the 2020 than for the 2019 - after adjusting for the lower rebate and the increased MSRP. I don't buy the argument that the demand for these trucks is so high that a $3,000 premium over last years model is justified at the dealership level. Like every other manufactured product, this truck is a commodity - and in this case, 100,000 of them are made every year.

Second, I do think that the completely revised new model, when it is introduced, has the potential to negatively affect 2020 values much more than past updates. I think that because every legitimate report (not just internet speculation) says that the new Tundra will have significantly improved gas mileage - reports are that the highway rating is targeted at 30 MPG and much improved city ratings too. If that is true, it will have a real impact.

My first year 07 was 12 years old when I traded it in. Never had any serious issues like most 07's didn't either and Toyota is known to never rush anything. Quite the opposite. There are always the usual software bugs.

Because if you don't buy it, someone else will....most likely trading in something they are upside down on and just tacking that extra 10 grand onto the price because hey....8 year car loans are no big deal and they'll be back to make another bad decision in 2-3 years.

I don't think you'll see a large depreciation when the 2021s come out even with the MPG and mainly because I would bet the new engine platform is probably going to push the price up $5k give or take.

Just like the ford which is quickly becoming a 70k truck. Maybe bmw will have to double their prices to keep up with ford’s markup

Actually they did rush the 5.7 into production because the dealerships knew people would be chomping at the bit for a new monster engine.

Not everyone has 10k+ sitting around for a new ac.
Hell, I had to borrow from my 401K so I could put a down payment on my home. But there wasn’t any penalty and 0 interest.

Speaking of AC, I’m praying my 18 year old home ac can hold on until I’m done paying off my Tundra.
If the interest rate is low, why not borrow someone else’s money to pay for things?

My last house I had a home warranty. $40/mo or something like that. They replaced my A/C, dishwasher, furnace, washer, sump pump and more...each time only a $50 service call. Some good options out there.

Borrowing money sucks, it's why I run two Amex cards (plat and gold). Balance due every month, whether it's $2000 or $10,000.

The new 2nd gen Tundra was in development for a long time and Toyota was able to keep the biggest details underwraps for quite some time until the auto shows. There were the usual sightings and magazine articles postulating on what little was getting leaked. It was pretty much ready for prime time when released on schedule. There were a couple dozen or so that had defective crank shafts early on out of the whole production run do to metallurgical issues from a usually very reliable supplier. That new 5.7 among other things like the massive Hino rear end, the bullet proof Aisin tranny, and huge rotors woke the big three that year. Caught them off guard. TundrHQ site covered this quite extensively back in 06 prior and after its release. Lots of guessing going on there right up to its release.

I too have questions about pricing but in different regard. Especially with the Adam's county clerk here in Colorado. I finally got my notice in the mail yesterday that the title work was complete and I can now get my plates. They're claiming my 14 with 104K miles has a taxable value of 29,992! Say what??????

Is this for the sales tax or an annual assessment for the tag? I paid 24K and had to pay sales tax to the tune of 6%. Annual registration is $75

I paid almost $3k in taxes/title picking up my truck used from a private party a couple years ago in Adams County.
After that it’s only like $190/yr

Assessment for the tag. It's possible that the 29.9K was the cost of the truck new in 14 and prorated for assessment. My 07 registration fee was $164 last year.

Fully loaded GMC Denali's can easily be over 70K. I recently went to a local GMC dealer with my boss and while waiting for him I looked over some Denali's. Sticker shocked...

I agree with most of what's been written above, but I originally opened the topic because I am choking on paying $50,000 for a truck that a month ago could be had for $44,000 or less. $2,000 of the increase can be blamed on the $2,000 lower rebate and $1,100 on the price increase for 2020, but the remaining $3,000 increase over the 2019 appears to be nothing but dealer markup over last year's model.

Is there anyone on the list who can share their experience with their dealer? Or can identify a dealer who isn't trying to gouge customers? I'm willing to travel to buy out of region if there is.

Also, wasn't there a recent dealer/distributor meeting at which the timing of the new truck was going to be announced?

Go to autotrader.com. It gives you a pretty good idea as to the variation among regions.

The 2020s are also in very short supply here in MA. Wait a month or three for supply to build-up on dealer lots and pricing should improve. This phenomenon happens with most model year changes with most brands and models. Better yet, if you don't need a new truck right now wait for the 2020/2021 transition to see if the new model is really that much better and if not pick up a 2020 at a discount.

In the end what is a vehicle worth? Whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

What you wrote seems to be the situation - very little 2020 inventory on the dealers' lots, so the pricing is inflexible. I may have to wait this out.[/QUOTE]

Always better to wait. I shopped for 3 months. I noticed yesterday when I was listening to the Car Pro show that there were very few advertising Tundras. Normally they are knocking off $7K from them except for TRD Pro.
