Cruise is intermittent and making me crazy. Anyone have insight into this problem? Start truck, push cruise button, light comes on but cruise won't set. Travel down road and hit set again and it works. Tap brake and cruise responds, press resume and no response. press on/off switch and dash light remains on but cruise won't respond but can't turn light off. Stop engine, restart, now light dose not come on, travel 5-50 miles trying on off button occasionally and finally it comes on. Attempt to set, either no response OR sets normally or can reset speed up or down and brake and resume, all good. stop at intersection and cruise light stays on but will not respond to commands, light stays on cannot turn off without stopping engine. Drove 400 miles with no cruise. Took to dealer who replaced cruise switch, checked out okay. Drove 80 miles and cruise problem is back. Sounds like bad connection somewhere right? checked all connections, brake light switch, etc. found nothing. now questioning relays or computer, or brake light switch.
Local mechanic can't detect any codes etc. Dealer is 90 miles away and $105 an hour. Need some input please.

What speeds are you trying to engage it at? No doubt this isn't your problem, but just in case... cruise wont engage under 28mph I think.

Might be a bad slip ring in the steering wheel.

I'll have to check your suggestions out and let you folks know. Appreciate your input. Oh,by the way, this afternoon in the Pouring Rain it worked flawlessly.

Did you ever sort out the problem? I'm have the exact same type of problem with my '07.

I replaced the C.C. Stalk and it was still acting intermittently, so I replaced it again because fiddling around with it I could get it to work occasionally so it seemed like I must have got a faulty one but the new one doesn't work right either.

My cruise control wouldn’t turn on at all and it was both the clock spring and cruise control switch. My specialist shop showed me the schematic of how they made the diagnosis. It’s fairly complex (to a layman like me), perhaps another mechanic that specializes in Toyota’s or imports is your best bet.

I just got the truck gimme a minute Ok who’s got something for sale?
Thank you for this answer and this post, ive been having mad issues with my CC as well, just randomly works, ive pretty much given up on it until now, is there a DIY post or is this complex enough to take it to a dealer?

also how much did it cost to have it done?

I paid $865, but you could probably get it done for about $300 cheaper if you buy your own parts, and if you have a mechanic that will install it for you. I do have a mechanic that would’ve done it that way for me, but I needed the job done (it was a Friday and I needed the truck for a road trip Sunday) so I paid the extra at the specialist shop.

$95 of that total was just the labor to diagnose the issue.

In my case the on/off function is what failed on the cruise control switch, while everything else still worked. And the clock spring wasn’t communicating the cruise control functions to the computer. Every other function on the clock spring still worked.

Replaced the clock spring with one for $20 from Amazon. Works perfect. Thanks

And it took all of 15 minutes to do with no special tools. I did replace the CC stalk before so if the old one was also bad I don't know but the clock spring was definitely to culprit.
