That sure makes it sound like a short or ground within the transfer case actuator, or it's seized up . I haven't had reason to mess with one, but some of the Tacoma guys on TW had success disassembling and cleaning them out and cleaning the contacts. Might be worth a shot.

I too have heard of this happening. It gets water and dirt in there and corrodes the connections.

you probably all figured this out already but the same thing happened to my 2002 tundra. The 4wd button would just flash. I took it to my Toyota dealer and they told me that the it was the transfer case actuator switch that had corroded. My two older sisters drove my truck for 4 years and were scared to drive in snow or anything other than regular pavement so the actuator switch got corroded from not moving in many years. I had to take it in and get the actuator switch replaced which is a switch that engages the transfer case. since my tundra just has a button and not a physical lever to put it in 4wd. It ended up being around $2500 and took about 3 days. It works now and the told me that I need to put it into 4wd at least once a month for just a little bit to keep that actuator switch active and avoid corrosion.

My 2000 had the actuator go out. Tranny shop said $3500 to tear it down and replace it. There's a retainer on the inside of the t case. You have to take it all apart. Toyota changed the design like eight times in the first two years. I got a used one out of an 03 for $300.00 from Yota Jim's in Denver with a 90 Day warranty. It worked flawlessly until I sold the truck last year.
