Instead of assaulting my new Tundra 1794 this winter I'm planning to drive my recently attained 02 Sequoia 4x4 with 230,000 miles on the clock. I paid $3400 for it then added 17" wheels, Michelin 245/65-17 LTX M/S tires, 4 corner brake job including calipers and valve cover gaskets The Sequoia didn't really need wheels and tires but I just can't stop myself once the pocketbook is opened. Now I have around $5500 invested in this 02 Sequoia SR5 and I'm feeling confident I won't get stranded or have to do any mechanical work when its -20 outside.
Come next year, let's say around April of 2020 I will post the outcome of this venture. Was it worth it? or not? fullsizeoutput_1bc1.jpgfullsizeoutput_1bd9.jpg fullsizeoutput_1bd9.jpg fullsizeoutput_1bc5.jpg

Cool. That seems like a fair price. Are those Michelin's really going to perform well in the snow?

You’re still under $10k for a very capable vehicle that looks to be in very good condition. Yeah, seems worth it.
Are you going to apply fluid film or waxoyl, or some other rust inhibitor?

I am so thankful Oregon doesn’t use salt...

Other than dedicated snow tires, the defenders have been the best tire I have driven with in the snow. On past trucks I have had:
    BFG AT KO
    Bridgestone Revo2
    Hankook Dynapro ATM
    Cooper AT3
    Stock Bridgestone duelers

I’m in the Portland area, and I just looked out of curiosity at similar Sequoias... best deal I tracked down was about $6k. Still not bad for all of the stuff you get.

Looks like you got a great deal.

If you bought new tires for a dedicated winter rig, why buy such a small size?

I'd have gone 255/75r17 or 265/70r17 to give more ground clearance and fill out the wheel wells.

Nice truck for winter use. great choice on the defenders. I have an 03 Sequoia and its amazing in winter. the full time unlocked 4wd option is like an AWD mode... it doesn't bind when cornering on dry stuff.

You got a great deal for that price.

I had a VW bug with wide tires on all 4 corners and it would'ent go through 8" of snow no matter what. I put the skinny stock tires on and went back to the same place with 8" of snow and I went through it like 2" of snow. I learned something about physics that day and will gladly pass down my knowledge to others.

Yep. Tires that perform well in the snow are not sexy looking.

    Great looking rig.

Totally agreed - thats why I like 255/75r17.

2.5" taller than what you have, and only 3/8" wider. (I like the ground clearance, in winter especially)

I'd spray that frame down with Fluid Film or similar if you folks use salt on the roads like we do here.

Great find, I started thread on General disussion. I got a 2003 Rav4 for $3200. I got 5 Sumitomo Ice Edge tires. It needs both front wheel bearings and a Exhaust manifold.

I'm a Michelin Man, myself, but from my Snow experience, I think the Michelin's L.T.X Mud & Snow, are a little better than the"Defenders"
in the snow, just my opinion thou..

Had an 01 Sequoia for 16years ending with 220k before regretfully selling it for $2500. If it hasn’t had the frame recall work done or even totally replaced ABSOLUTELY do something to inhibit the rot. I was lucky to only find one small hole in the front frame horn when selling. (NJ/PA car) My only major issues were timing belt/H2O pump, and brake calipers. Watch the rear hatch handle they can be brittle in the cold. Also rust prone spots on the front corner of the rear wheel wells where the back door meets. Great great great SUV, never got stuck or stranded, miss mine that was exact Marlin blue/silver already.

Could you give me specifics on the brakes? Or is there a good thread? I have an 07 and the brakes leave a lot to be desired.

    Thanks!!
