I am new to this and keep hearing about Techstream. Are there different kinds, can anyone recommend where or what to buy, is it easy to use?. Are there hidden dangers in using it? Appreciate any input. Thank you.

Probably not through official channels. Owners using Techstream are using pirated software. Another forum has a thread 130 pages long about this topic, but most of it is outdated and trash. This thread occasionally wakes up here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/toyota-techstream-software.22591/

I have looked at getting Techstream from time to time, but generally purchasers of pirated copies find the software difficult to install and get to work properly. In most cases, the support from sellers is not helpful. Further, the capabilities of the pirate software vary; i.e. many versions do not have the full dealer Techstream capability. With your 2016, having the latest Techstream version is probably not a high priority (versions change as models change). My experience is you will need to get the V2.0.4 firmware rather than the previous version, and also need a version that works on your computer (32bit, 64bit, or either)

The following link is probably what I would try if I needed Techstream right now. Yes, it is pricey compared to similar offerings, but note that it's rated 4.1/5.0 stars on Amazon. I don't see how it could be ranked that high unless it was easy to install and effective.

Thank you. I am hesitant about things to begin with I am of the philosophy if it aint broke dont fix it. It almost looks like in the long run using this is risky at best, I am not that handy to begin with and would not want to mess around with what I hope is the last car investment I ever make. Heck I wont even get into the mod band wagon other than the magnets i put in for my piece.

About the only way you can harm your truck with pirate software is to actually get it to work, and to make changes in your ECU you don't truly understand. For example...turning on a pre-existing alarm: it's either off, or it's on. Get to playing with f/a ratios in a flex fuel truck?...I suspect that's a whole 'nother deal bwdik. :D

The worst risk would probably be to your laptop, so most guys use an old laptop they don't use anymore.
