My dad has an '86 Toyota pickup he bought new. He drove it roughly 250-300k and it got hot. warped the head. finally after sinking a couple thousand into engine work and no luck of a fix, he bought a refurbished engine off the internet for about $3k and that's been about roughly 15 years ago. The clock doesn't work in the truck anymore but this is his DD so we all take a good guess hes close to 500k in the truck now. the engine will probably outlast the body for that matter for anyone who knows about a 22r engine from back in the day, but just keep your head up brother. I have faced my engine battles with a few of the vehicles I still own too.

I was over at Continental in the Spring and they have a 2013 Rock Warrior on their lot. They mark stuff way up, and it has been there awhile. If you could get your rig working on the cheap I bet they would give you a decent trade in for it... The truck I was looking at was a 2016 Tundra the salesman said was a TRD PRO. I walked up to it and it was an SR5... after talking to the clueless management it came to my attention that they gave the guy who traded it in more money than it is worth. Just saying that you could get a skookum deal.

Yeah I think keeping it is the right choice too. I’m a big fan of no vehicle payments and with my truck paid off its hard to go back to that now. I will update once the engine is in and hopefully everything is back to normal with no issues

Alaska I agree, any of the dealer lots up here want way too much for their vehicles, especially used ones. Hopefully the former owner got more out of them due to them not even being aware of what they were buying lol.

    Hi Adam86

Im going through the same issue as you.

    2012 tundra crewmax, 155km/95miles.
Told the valve spring broke and looking for a new engine.

Did you tear you engine apart yet? was it the spring? also curious if the block was still good.

Maybe if we buy engine together in bulk we can resell them

    Andrew

Andrew78 the retainer which holds the valve broke as did the spring and the valve fell into the engine. Although rare this seems like it’s not unheard of for these trucks. The sweet spot for it happening seems to be around 100,000 miles from posts I’ve seen with other people reporting the same issue. In order to really see inside the engine the head will need to be pulled. Depending on the damage a rebuild could be an option vs replacing the motor. But keep in mind the tolerances inside this engine as will all new engines are extremely tight. There could be damage where something may be bent just slightly, not enough to even see with the naked eye but enough to cause more problems down the road so it’s really just a gamble and each particular case will be unique on a case by case basis. For me I went with a replacement engine. I live in Alaska so I found a local option already. If you’re in the states then you’ll have a lot more to pick from. Best of luck to you and hope you get your truck back on the road soon.

Disconcerting to hear of others having this expensive problem. So it may be rare but perhaps not so rare. Good luck to you guys and please keep the rest of us posted.

Somewhere on Facebook a dealership was selling a complete frame engine and trans for a really good price. It was used as a show room display of the truck. I’ll see if I can find it

I used to live in Rural BC and always was shocked at the used toyota prices in the area. Just crazy. So i can only imagine what its like in Alaska. If its any consolation i would do the same and replace with a used motor if this were my case. I personally would rather have my 08 than a brand new truck and payment. Let us know when you get it back up and running!

Where is your tundra living? Do either of you garage yours? Wondering if it’s a frigid cold temp thing...

Spaceiscool yeah prices are definitely high, and the shipping prices make it even more painful. And I hear ya on keeping the trucks, I think many of us Toyota owners buy the trucks with the expectation they’ll last a long time and plan on keeping them long term. Should hopefully be up and running again by the end of next week!

Jrharvey02 the last few years up here we haven’t had what I would really call frigid cold temps, at least not for an extended period of time. I don’t have room in my garage for the truck so it’s kept in the driveway, but I always plug it in when the temp warrants it. Can’t say if cold has any effect or not but I can say when it actually failed it was in the 50’s that day.

I think the other guy looking for an engine, Andrew, was looking into that. Not sure what the status of it is though.

    Nothing on the frame/Engine.

I'm leaning towards a rebuilt because of cost.

Update on the truck. Picked it up this morning. A couple little attention to detail lapses I noted like the tube for windshield fluid wasn’t hooked in but other than that everything seems to work fine. Sounds like it starts a little rougher than my old engine for whatever reason however idles and runs nice and smooth with no issues. I do have some stored codes that my code reader won’t clear that’ll I’ll have to have them clear but so far so good otherwise. I’ll keep a close eye on everything and bring the truck back in a couple thousand miles so they can give it a good look over.

I guess I spoke too soon. Check engine light came on when I was leaving for work this morning. Back to the shop it goes. My patience is really starting to wear thin with this truck.

Hang in there, my replacement motor did the same thing. Few tweaks here and there it will run great! You are saving thousands of dollars to replace your truck in the same shape as yours.

Patience sir. That is the equivalent of a transplant for a person. Now the brains are trying to figure out what the hell is going on. You're in too deep to turn back now. But I'll bet you'll still be better off. 40 years ago it was set the timing and adjust the carb and throttle linkage and you were essentially done

Yeah that’s very true. Hopefully it’s not an actual mechanical issue that needs correcting and just a communication issue. On a positive note this engine sounds nice and healthy so she should have lots of life left.

Well looks like one of my two codes was just a communication issue with a sensor to the computer. The other however is for the good old secondary air injection valve which is a common issue on the 07-11 Tundras. The engine has parts covered under warranty but not labor. This truck has been really eating away at my savings lately....
