Yes definitely DIY if you can. You save half that at least. Plus you know you’ll do it right with no screws missing when you’re done. Plus just think of it as bonding time lol.

Nothing to apologize for at all Leo! Occasionally my local dealer has a decent deal on Toyota motor oil, but we have at least one member, if not two, who will post at least twice a year a huge Walmart discount/rebate for Mobil 1. After all is said and done, the Walmart deal with oil and filter after rebates is like around$30:thumbsup:

Yea that’s a good deal when you can get a rebate. How long does the rebate take to get back to you?

I'm not sure how long but I'm sure someone might chime in about that Walmart deal who may have done that. I know the response is quite good when the rebate/deal gets posted.

Below is a picture of the Toyota part number most people use for this mod. You can see that it clearly says "TOYOTA" on the side of it. You reuse the bottom plug, center perforated tube, and spring from the original plastic housing.

    https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyo...5SD30PXGA5H&psc=1&refRID=YD8TXAMCQ5SD30PXGA5H

Do your oil changes yourself. It would worry me if they felt they screwed up so bad they needed to comp the oil change. What are they NOT telling me? Hmmmm.

Well guys I took some pictures, didn’t see a Toyota logo on there so I’m guessing it’s dorman. I think I saw a made in China marking on the side. What y’all think?

So now I’m really bugged about the center piece for the filter. Need to have a look.

also, all the videos I’ve seen, the center piece is removed In order to let the oil out of the filter canister. This center piece doesn’t look like it can be removed.

The Toyota housing has a round flat plug on the bottom of the housing. I can't tell if that Chinese housing has a bottom plug or not. The Dorman appears to be configured just like the Toyota housing.

Here is a YouTube video showing the Tundra center perforated tube being retrofitted to a new Toyota aluminum housing. There are many more videos on topic. Search YouTube for Tundra oil filter housing upgrade and watch as many as you need.

Hmm. Yea I had seen that one before. Just thinking that if these guys didn’t switch the large center stem from the original filter over the the new one, how long does the filter last before it collapses?

Thanks bro, yea mine for sure isn’t a Toyota style. My concern now is that if these guys didn’t swap out the center piece, I probably can’t get a replacement unless I get a whole new set up.

If I were in your position, I would not drive the truck until I removed the housing and inspected the center tube. You do not want that filter element to come apart and send paper particles into bearing oil passages.

Go to your local dealer (or @Roman ) to see how quickly he can get you a Tundra housing with the long center tube...it'll likely take at least several days. You can do this after your inspection if you have the time. If you find the oil change wizards used the proper center tube for the Tundra filter, reinstall the filter and housing and add oil to make up for the spillage. That would give me peace of mind. If you find they left the short tube in the housing, you'll need to either use the Tundra plastic housing from the dealer or swap the long tube into the Chinese housing. Once you verify the center tube length, you can decide what you want to do from there.

Well i verified that’s it’s a dorman. Problem is I still don’t know if the center tube is the right length.

probably a stupid question but can you remove the oil filter cap without losing all the oil?

can you purchase just the center tube from dorman or Toyota?

Yes, you can remove the filter without losing all the oil. With a drain pan underneath, and proper oil filter wrench, unscrew the main filter housing and carefully lower it down into the drain pan. You'll spill a little bit over the top of the housing, but you can simply replace that with fresh oil through the top filler. Press the filter element down against the spring tension to the bottom of it's travel. If the top of the tube is near flush with the top of the filter element, you're OK, you have the right center tube.

Purchasing just the center tube from either source is doubtful in my opinion.

If you have Amazon Prime you can probably get the tools and materials you need for changing your own oil before the weekend if you order now:

    Filter housing wrench: https://www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools...JYQR3Z30YYS&psc=1&refRID=ETV2EPQJQJYQR3Z30YYS

Not needed this weekend, but for future changes:

    Mobil 1 EP 0W-20 (2 req'd): https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-Extended-Performance-Full-Synthetic-Motor-Oil-0W-20-5-qt/36019107

    Oil drain plug gaskets: https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyo...PHEK5KJR35X&psc=1&refRID=BVXRG8177PHEK5KJR35X

    Filters (2): https://www.amazon.com/Set-Toyota-0...PHEK5KJR35X&psc=1&refRID=BVXRG8177PHEK5KJR35X

Note this filter part number includes the filter housing O-ring gasket (must be installed correctly, see instructions on filter element box), O-ring gasket for housing drain plug, and a pretty useless plastic housing drain valve. Filter elements come both with and without the O-ring gaskets...make sure you're getting the gaskets with the element or you have to buy separate. They must be changed every time.

If you want to prevent the oil from running down your hands and arms like it will this weekend, I recommend the wrench and drain hose combo below (use instead of wrench listing above). If you don't mind a little oil running off your elbow, you can do without the drain hose:

    https://www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools...9Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

    Torque Values:
    Oil pan drain plug = 30 ft-lb
    Oil filter housing = 18 ft-lb
Oil filter housing drain plug = 9 ft-lb

How do feel about the fumoto or ez drain valves?

Never used them. They are probably convenient, but I don't like a quarter turn valve that could open up and drain my oil pan without me knowing. (Yeah, yeah, for all their champions, I'm sure they're foolproof and would never do that. :D) I like a drain plug that screws in and is torqued, but that's just me. I would never try to talk anyone out of using one.

Also....if you do ever add a fumoto valve....mines got a plastic clip that locks the lever from moving and a rubber cap on the end.

Thanks Proto, man I do like those. I feel that it would be very unlikely that the valve handle would move while under driving condition. You have to lift and move to the right, correct?

but that retaining clip gives peace of mind.

Correct, move the clip, push the lever and side to the right . It’s also spring loaded lever so it has a few safeties. Plus is does sit up out of the way snagging on something would be unlikely.

Talking about oil changes. What do you guys use to contain your used oil? I’ve bought the plastic ones but the only last 2 or 3 times before some thing snaps off.

Has any one seen a metal option?

I just use a plastic oil pan with no parts or lid and then pour it into the empty Mobil 1 jugs.
