I actually hate these types of threads, but I am exhausted and confounded on what to do.

I have a chance to get a work vehicle in the form of a Xterra. Transmission is bad. Owner is tired of throwing money at it. It is a 2005. Been sitting in his field for 1 year. Clear title.

Owner needs a new a/c unit at his house. He would buy the a/c, pick it up and have it delivered on site. I only feel right to make sure the coil isn't leaking and it would be a R22 dry charged unit. I would have labor and the cost of the freon. R22 went cheap this summer and I bought a few too many jugs at around $400 each, so I have plenty. He would register the a/c, submit the warranty and I would guarantee my work, but not the unit.

He says the Xterra will drive onto a trailer that I could borrow to bring home, but the tranny is shot with a radiator leak into the transmission fluid. SMOD

Decisions, decisions... I've been looking for a work vehicle to do service calls. I don't work for a company. I teach HVAC and then work at night and weekends doing HVAC. Work all the time. I could replace the tranny on my own, but right I think I can afford to have it done... just praying that it doesn't cost $5k and then I'm upside down.

Anyone have insight on Xterra and transmission problems / replacement? Crap vehicle?

Any issues with mice in your area? That could be a nightmare to deal with.

A vehicle for 400.00, a remanufactured transmission is 2700.00. Not bad...if all things are known. Radiators are pretty cheap.

Only major problem with early 2nd gen Xterra's is coolant mixing with automatic transmission fluid. There is a buy pass that needs to be done. Check and see if this have been taken care of. If it's a 6 speed you have no issues. Other then that it's pretty sound vehicle. I had a 06 that ran like a champ. Higher mileage Xterra's do seem to burn out O2 sensors. Easy fix but can lead to serious problems if not addressed, which I experienced. My fault though. Xterra is a great SUV and will take you through almost anything. I say go for it.

    Good call on the mice.
Lots and lots of mice in those fields. It's why we have so many coyotes and fox. I think I would find out very quick if it didn't start and drive on the trailer, but it's a gamble.

I replaced an Xterra transmission due to the coolant leak a few years back with a friend of mine. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT MODEL TRANSMISSION! We ordered a salvaged trans which turned out to be for the Xterra Off-Road model. (His wasn't, and we weren't aware that the different models used a different transmission - learn from our ignorance!). It will bolt up and appear OK, but the truck will not start. Pretty light display on the dash, but thats it. Took us many hours and many beers before we swapped the "brain" from the bad trans to the new and it fired up. Not a permanent fix, so back to the salvage yard it went. We finally got the right model installed and he's still driving it today.

Thanks for the advice. I will run a vin check to make sure I get the right transmission if I do it. Pretty positive that he's still driving it after all those beers:drunk:. lol
