so does anyone have a recommendation for a decent paint meter? Would like to get one, but can justify spending $800 for one. Any suggestions?

I’ve looked myself and they are pretty high. I was actually looking for a gloss meter yesterday, and the cheapest of those were a couple hundred dollars.

I found on that looks pretty good for 200.00.
Extech CG204, but again I do not have this.

Thanks for the replies. In the meantime I reached out to my buddy who repairs classic cars. I'm ordering this off of Amazon based on his suggestion.
