I have a 38 gallon tank. I have noticed this since I first filled up my miles to empty is wrong. My truck says I am empty when I still have about 8 gallons left in the tank. Anyone else have this issue? Is this a calibration issue? Below are from a fill up yesterday. Based on the miles to empty after fill up, my truck thinks I get less than 10 MPG.

It's got something to do with the fuel pump being inside the tank. They don't let all the gas run out of the tank due to not wanting the pump to over heat. I believe that's what I read on some similar threads!! Do a search on here there's other conversations about it.

Mine does the same thing. I have the 26.2 gal. tank and it only lets me pump in like 22 gals. max? I just go with it but having an extended tank would be nice!

Yeah, I've read this on a few different threads as well. Trying to save you hundreds of dollars I reckon! Replacing a fuel pump won't be cheap.

It's a common Toyota thing. My old Highlander did that, my wife's Prius does that, my Tundra does that. The amount of "reserve" is different for each of the vehicles but it is there. You either just don't think about it, or just think when it shows your "empty" you have X number of gallons left.

Tacomas are the same. E is at 18.5 gallons while the tank is really 21...ish.

In the owners manual. It's a shame that looking for this information did not even cross my mind.

So if that 8 gallons are "reserve", you can technically go about 100 more miles before totally out. I guess you run the risk of the fuel pump, but in a jam, you could, huh?

I guess, but I really prefer when gauges read actual and allow me to make my own decisions. I really am smarter than my truck no matter what the engineers think.

If it is to keep the fuel pump cool, I would have preferred a different design so as not to haul around the extra weight for the entire life of the truck.

    Rant over

Sadly the engineers will always go with the majority. The majority are the ones who choose to stay ignorant to the design of there automobile.Id like to see an actual percentage number of Tundra owners vs Tundra enthusiasts.

I got 38 gallon too and never put in more than 30 gallons when pushing empty.

A little of this and a little of that.
I prefer to fill 'er up when I hit half a tank, unless I'm on a road trip.

I did that once in my Highlander Hybrid. 17.2 Gal tank, usually showed empty at 15. I ended up hitting a bad stretch where there was like 0 gas stations and anything. When I finally filled up I put 17 gallons in there. It's nice to know that you have the reserve, but I don't know if I'd want to get that close.

38 gal tank here. I typically fill up at around ¼ tank left, but can't remember how many miles to empty is indicated. Last weekend it was under ¼ and it took 28.304 gallons. Most of the time I'm putting in between 22.7 and 28 gallons. I'll pay more attention to the miles to go next time.

26.2 gal tank here and the lowest I have taken it down to was a refil of 24.7 gal. Stretching it a lot.
