A car hit a power pole down the street from us and caused a power surge. I think we got lucky with just one led can light being toasted (we heard a pop from the kitchen when the power came on for a split second). It sounds like a lot of people in the neighborhood lost major appliances, outlets, surge protectors, and possibly solar equipment.

This is the first time this has happened, but with the way I see people driving now, probably won't be the last.

Does anyone have any experience with whole home surge protectors?

    Not familiar with any.

Past close lightning strike took out many of our electronics; TV's, PS4, cable boxes, landline cordless phones, laptops.
Ordered various surge strips from Amazon. All rated at 3600 Joules or more. Haven't had an issue since. Cheap surge strips at walmart rated at like 1200 joules or less.

I have a whole home surge protector on my last two homes. Several styles, and my last one fit into the breaker panel, or an external one like I have now.

This external one has popped several times in the past 18 months.

we have those where ever building code requires, and a couple of them had popped, but were able to reset easily.

that one looks nice and beefy. I'm guessing those require a professional install?

I would say using an electrician is a good idea if you’re not comfortable with the install.

The ones that fit inside you can easily do yourself.

I have no issues when using 220V and I have: well pump, welder, oven, and dryer. I have used all at the same time.

I would. Insurance deductibles can get spendy.

The stand alone style (external) is much more robust. I also have one do to a less than robust grid in my county. Super easy install if your familiar with electrical panels. That being said, exercise caution. I am an electrician by trade and see many homeowners way too comfortable with electricity. Invisible hazards take even the most experienced by surprise.

In Colorado, we have the second highest lightning strikes in the nation. Florida is the first.

Whole home surge protectors are worth every penny. Utility companies will never tell you there was a surge (trust me, I work for one in the electrical industry), insurance will only cover a fraction of the electronics due to depreciation.
