Good morning, I have a 2016 Tundra 4x4 SR 4dr Double Cab Pickup SB (4.6L V8), with a 6500 lb. towing capacity. We have been interested in getting a camper for awhile now and are starting to seriously look now. My issue is dealers are showing us stuff that are in the upper bounds of this truck's capacity. So I am looking at or people with similar truck who have towed to get maximum weight recommendations that will not make driving horrendous. I know just because I can tow 6500 lbs doesn't make it a pleasant drive. I should mention the vehicle will have me, my wife, and two kids. Most trips will be under 250 miles(long weekend) but there will be a few that are 900+ miles. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

    Don

    Welcome to the party Don!

We have very capable trucks, but most have the 5.7L engine. Id imagine you would be fine with a 4k lb trailer.

I tow a 4600 lb trailer with mine, but I've got a 5.7. I think you would be fine with something in my size range. The issue that most of us run into is the payload capacity, not the towing capacity. You may find your truck a little underwhelming while towing up steep grades, so I wouldn't go too much over the mid 4000 lb area.

Ive got a 2016 DC with the 4.6L and we tow a 2016 Rockwood Mini Lite 2306. It has a dry weight of 3890lbs and it does great on flats. if we hit a steep grade i can tell the truck hates it. And its just me and the wife with our bicycles and camping gear for 3 days usually. Ive towed it with water once to dry camp and will never do that again. I highly recommend finding something under 4K lbs if you can.

Thanks, that is around where I am looking, trying to do a reality check. You talk to these dealers they will try to sell you one with a dry weight of 5500 lbs telling me I have 1000 lbs to spare. Do you know approximately what the actual "On the Road" weight is of your Trailer. THANKS Don

If you stay within %75-80 of the listed capacity, you will be in the 5000 +/- 200 range loaded (not dry).
I prefer %70 range but that's not very realistic.

I easily towed a 5k boat and trailer setup with my Tacoma. Find it hard to believe a 4.6L Tundra wouldn’t easily tow the same or more.

Don, have you used outdoorsy or any other sources to rent a similar size/type you’re looking at buying to give it a weekend try out before dishing out cash on your own? I can’t recommend that enough. A few hundred bucks could save you a few thousand dollar headache.

Trailers are like boats, esp with kids you’ll get 1 footitis really fast. These trucks don’t depreciate badly, so you may be better off getting a 5.7 crew to open your trailer options and back seat comfort to a whole new level. If you get a trailer that doesn’t work well for your family, just based off weight, you won’t use it near as much. All this you prolly know, just figured I’d throw it out there.
