    Just one ear .
She cleaned it up. It had some discharge coming out.

Good deal. I would encourage you to use the 50:50 white vinegar and water. Occasionally I will recommend vinegar and rubbing alcohol if there is not too much inflammation, otherwise it may burn a little. The alcohol will help dry out the ear canal which is ideal since bacteria and yeast thrive in moist conditions. You can use the OTC ear cleaner if you like but I would still do the other as well. Get him seen asap though.

VCA is cooperate owned but hopefully will be reasonable. Tell her to be honest and you don't have a lot of money. An exam and ear meds are bare minimum and probably good enough. The gold standard would be to do an ear cytology and do meds accordingly but I prescribe ear meds all the time without cytology. Tell them you don't have the funds for that and ask if you can just try the meds first.

My shepherd broke out in hives with everything we fed him. I felt so bad because his belly was bright red with rash and he was always scratching. We switched him to a raw food diet and he never had another issue. Its expensive but if you've tried everything thing else like we did, maybe this will work.

My Dorkie is on a special diet because the vet noticed she had bad ear infections and said it was an allergic reaction to her food. He gave me a list of things to avoid: wheat, chicken, beef, yeast, and dairy. I don't think she is sensitive to wheat since she's had it with no noticeable reactions, but if she has chicken she usually starts scratching at her ears and I have to put some Zymox (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0025YMTH6) drops in. She adjusted pretty well to the changes but misses chicken a lot. If my roommate comes home with KFC she'll sit outside his door until he's done.

For my Lab I started using Zymox ear cleaner whenever he got in the water or got a bath to prevent ear infections because he got them a lot. For the times he did get an ear infection (before I started cleaning the ears whenever he got wet) there is a non-antibiotic one that works amazing. I get it at the local farm store, but I see it's on chewy or Amazon...https://www.amazon.com/ZYMOX-Pre-Cl...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=EYRJ6XVFBYB7S2X2M711 I think it basically feeds on the yeast in the ear and gets rid of it.

We used to have issues with the different types of foods, some made the dogs very gassy, others they would barely touch. We have been giving our Sheppard and mastiff before she passed a 14yrs a dog food brand from tractor supply that they both loved and they both seemed much more energetic. When we lived in NC very at petsmart tried getting us to have surgery and bunch of other things for the mastiff or she didnt have long, and she lived 12yrs longer after that. THe Sheppard is now a spoiled ass that lays around on the couch till she is ready to go for a ride, she is now around 15yrs old.20190911_062506.jpg

400 is not cheap at least not at my clinic. Plus I didn’t see 100 bucks for meds, where do you see that?

Malacetic is 40 bucks? Interceptor plus is at least 50 bucks? I realize that adds up to 90 dollars. I was generalizing. Last time I had a big unexpected issue with my dog he had a raptured disc and it cost close to 10g all in. So... I’m saying that 400 is getting off light comparatively. Still a lot of money, trust me I’d feel 400 right now.

Prices very quite a bit based on location. Andersen SC prices are probably quite different than San Diego CA prices.

Gah what do you think you are, a vet?!?! (I know you are a vet, I’m just being early morning before coffee funny)

Well when you compare it to a Sx like that, sure 400 is just a chip in the bucket. That’s why I was asking him if that was the avg prices around where he lives. That’s high for here.

Get some ear cleaner over the counter, $12 for this last over a year with cleaning every couple weeks. Squirt in let dog shake head, then cotton ball to clean up.

I'm glad to hear this. We tried the really expensive grain free food for a while because we thought it was the "thing to do". All it did was back up our Husky's anal glands. That was fun.

We have been feeding them the Tractor Supply food for years and they love it. It has pretty good reviews for overall quality.

Both of my dogs have ate tractor supply brand dog food for years and love it. They both have been healthy and more energetic ever since started tractor supply brand. One was 14yrs old and my sheppard is 15 now

I put my lab on sweet potato and salmon dog food as he was itching all the time. Stopped itching that day, his coat got beautiful... like you could watch his hair go shiny from the base to the end of the hair over a period of 6 hours. It was incredible. Oh, and his poops smelled flipping terrible. I guess everything is a trade off. And then the other dogs all got in that food cuz everyone wants what the other one has. I feel like that stuff has been a great investment. Imagine 3 100+ plus lbs and 1 30 lbs dog crapping the most terrible foul smelling poops ever. My neighbors were complaining. They got used to it.

I can’t even get close enough to even squirt this solution in Kilos ears. I may get bit.

We have had the bloodhound maybe 4 months. He’s an ornery A-hole. Gol-Dang that dog is hard headed and he gets pissy with me. I swat him and tell him to get out of the bed and he growls at me. I’d usually wear a dogs ass out at that point but he is damn near as big as I am (literally he weighs 25 pounds less) and I’m not sure who would come out on top. So I dropped him off at the trainers 3 weeks ago and said you deal with it. Picking him up Monday. Hopefully it was money well spent. 18 dogs and the first one I had to take to a trainer.
