Hi all. I'm going in for my 55k checkup tomorrow and I was wondering if I should ask about this...seems like my rear differential has some leak marks. Normal? Nothing to worry about?

    sorry for the bad pic

Coming here with the same issue. The post linked above looks like it was deleted (pretty sure I remember reading that thread quite a bit and the OP was banned from the forum, so that may be why) so maybe we need to track some info in this one.

@justfortun were you able to get your leak fixed? I just noticed some weeping from the seem the other day. I have 22k miles on my truck, so it's still under warranty, but I'm curious if anyone has had issues with dealerships making the repair.

Here's the passenger side with signs of the leak:

    Drivers side looks fine:

I had noticed a "seep/weep" mark on mine at about 40k miles.

I thought I was done with diff weeps when I traded my tacoma off. Had the gasket replaced once under warranty and then spots returned 15k miles later. Wouldn't touch it again unless it was considered a leak vs a weep due to revised guidance by Toyota.

Dang. Guess I'll just have to see what the dealership says about it at my next service. Doesn't look like anything catastrophic in my case, but I know it wasn't there 5k miles ago.

Yeah, OP was banned and the thread was deleted. Seems most dealers will just retorque the bolts and say keep an eye on it. I remember reading 1 or 2 got a new gasket. Most people said it’s such a small seep, that you’ll never have any issues from it.

Never had it looked at. I'll check it tomorrow to see if it's gotten worse.

Here's mine on my 2018. If it was easy to check the differential oil level (without having to crawl under the truck), then I'd be less concerned about this whole "seep" issue. By the way, I'm at 20K on the odometer. Differential.jpg

Yours kinda looks like it's coming (at least in part) from the breather. That doesn't look good...

Agreed. I will make a 2nd attempt at getting the dealer to repair it. It definitely has gotten worse since the dealer first declined to repair it.

A few months back i fiddled with the breather, just rotating it and making sure it was free. It was a little crusty and didn't turn too freely. I looked under this weekend and it seems the weep has gone away as there is dry dust on top of the weep marks, no longer wet looking.

I don't know that I've ever owned a drop out third that didn't weep, the pics shown are nothing to lose any sleep over.
Absolutely check your breathers they are almost always the cause of this

I would agree with a slight weep and nothing to worry about. My 2020 has had some stains on it for the last 10,000 miles or so, has not gotten any worse. I do not see any webpage near the vent, I may wiggle it around just to see if it sounds crusty, like some others have said.
