I was having the same problem with the engine light and traction control. I also would have the problem of starting and dieing. Turns out I had a bad battery. The voltage showed good but load test proved to be bad. The alternator would keep it running but not enough steady power to work everything while running. I also noticed that my voltage gage would fluctuate ever so slightly (the whole reason I decided to check into the battery). Replaced the battery and problem went away.

My baby is POSSESSED! 2017 Toyota Tundra 1794 edition. 24k milage

I've been having issues with the headlights, tail lights, and dash lights going out when I make a right turn (3times) and left turn (1 time). Been to dealer on that 3 times now to no avail even when I pulled in to service with no lights.

NOW I tried to leave driveway last night and dash went CRAZY. First it was showing something about check sensors with a picture of truck with 6 circles (1 on each side and one on each corner). Sat for a second in confusion. Doors were open so shut doors and nothing changed. So I thought no problem I can still drive without those warning sensors. So pulled out if driveway and senor thing went off but No Traction light came on. Pulled over in front of house.. walked around to see if any damage around truck like it had been hit or something but all clear. Got in truck and turned corner. Stepped on gas and nothing.. like gas peddle was disconnected. No reving or anything. But truck would still move tho only at about 5mph. So turned around and brought back to driveway.

Went out this morning and big puddle of water under truck and still dripping. Got in truck, traction light still on and temperature guage rising right off.

Going to have towed to dealer tomorrow (Monday). NOT A HAPPY CAMPER. Oh and the airbag light was on entire time and still in this morning.

While at dealer they will be checking my headight issue for the 4th time. HeasliHead, dash lights, and tail lights go out when blinker on and turning. I'm VERY upset.

    Will update...

Sorry to hear about all the issues @Bam66 having issues like that in a new truck is not cool at all! Hopefully the dealer will be able to pinpoint the issue and get you back up and running. Good luck and keep us posted!

I got an oil change two days ago and an three starts later i got the check engine light and the traction control off message. I went back to the Goodyear shop that did the oil change and they read the code. I can’t remember the code number but they said if was a “knocking sensor” throwing the fault. They tried clearing it three times and it came back every time. I made an appointment with the dealer for next week.

I left it alone for two days and started it up and i still have the fault. After reading all the comments on here i fell like the check engine light and traction control off message is a default for any error messages the CPU recieves. I’m going to check the gas cap and go disconnect the battery and see if it throws the fault again. I don’t have Hugh hope thst is going to do anything but it’s worth a shot and easy. The truck sounds like it’s running fine and definitely not knocking. It’s a 2016 and 57,000 miles on it and on it second battery. That’s the only issue i have ever had with it.

I will say when i get it up to 70 on the freeway it doesn’t sound like it’s down shifting into 5th or 6th gear. RPM seem to stay at 3000 which is high for cruising speed and not towing anything. I couldn’t get over 70 cause of the traffic in the freeway so I’m not sure if it would of hit the shift point going a little faster. Scratching my head over this.

I will update if it clears it and if not what the dealer says.

3000 RPM at 70 mph seems kind of high. I don't remember what my RPMs average at that speed, but I'm pretty sure they're lower than that. Do you have the 5.7L? Have the RPMs always been that high cruising at 70, or did they reach that number after the dash lights came on?

I do remember reading posts from those with the 2nd generations having dash lights come on when the air injection pump (AIP) failed, but they reported it would usually go into limp mode. I don't remember reading about any 3rd gens having AIP issues, though.

Yeah it’s a 5.7L TRD limited. No I’m pretty sure the RPMS are normally just under 2000 when cruising at 70. I also tried shifting into the Manual shift mode but it goes into S4 right away no matter how fast I’m going. Lol. I tried shifting it past S4 and the display says it went but i don’t hear or see it shift RMPs wise.

I checked gas cap right now and reset battery.

Turned it on and it died right after the first attempt. Second attempt it came on but the fault came back. Ugh

Very odd. I'm stumped, but curious to know what you eventually find out.

I have the same issue I’m dealing with now. I’m told from dealer it’s the speed sensors on the transmission. Just not sure where they are located exactly. They want about $700 to replace. Each sensor is $145

Sorry for not updating this last week. So apparently even thoug I live in the city (Las Vegas) a mouse, rat, squirrel or other rodent ate part of my wiring harness under the engine manifold. Because I’m military (they took some money off) it was $623 ish to repair at the dealer. It’s crazy tho...60 bucks in parts st the most...rest is labor.

So i have purchased some rodent repellent spray that I’m going to lace all over the engine compartment.

Hello guys I am having the same problem here with my tundra too. Traction control off light and check engine light came on shortly I got my 6" lift put on. I'm not sure if the installer have forgot to plug some wires or not. My truck is also not passing 3000 rpm like @radar rat said. I checked the gas cap and it seems fine. Please help I'm not sure what's going on.
    Thanks in advance.

I have found the transmission speed sensors. There are 2 located towards top of tranny on passenger side. I have 2014 sr5. I bought 1 sensor on rockauto for $50 gonna replace 1 and see if that fixes it I noticed won’t shift past 4th gear. Count your shifts next time see if same issue

@Giant3890 my tundra doesn't shift into 4th gear either. After you replace your speed sensor did the check engine light and traction control off light went away and shift into 5th gear?

There are 2 sensors buy 1 try it in the front first if that don’t work then put old one back and new one in back of tat don’t work then might need 2 sensors. But both sensors are the same just different spots.

Updates: finally got my truck back today from toyota dealer. We have discovered that there were some rodents coming in and out from my engine bay. They have chewed up my knock sensor wire that cost me a arm and a leg. ($954.00) warranty not covered
I'm thinking putting some moth balls in the engine bay I heard it works. Do anybody have any others suggestions for rodents repellent?

My truck just did this same thing today after just basic maintenance. I Havnt tried to reset the ECU yet by disconnecting the battery. I had to head out to dinner but so far it’s driving fine without issues.

    2016 Toyota Tundra
    Hi Guys,

I am very new to this forum and I am a woman who knows nothing about cars or trucks so some of the response go pretty much over my head. I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra and has a little bit over 51,000 miles on it. I started experiencing some problems with it about a month ago after returning from a trip to Sesame Place with my kids. There was a kind of freak storm that day with a lot of lightening so I don't know if the problems I am experiencing now are related. When I returned to my truck I was unable to open it with the remote so I used the key to manually open it. I drove to my daughter's home and got out of the truck and about 15 minutes later the alarm went off and I could not shut it off with the remote. I had to start the engine and let it run for a minute and then turn it off. Went back inside and the alarm went off again. I went on like that for the rest of the night. Our last resort was to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for the rest of the night. WE were afraid our neighbors would be upset. Took it to the dealership the next day and the said that it was possibly the door sensor, they adjusted it and ordered a new sensor. My husband never went back to install the new sensor since the problem never manifested itself again.

BUT, now about a three weeks later, I driving on the highway and I hear a rattling sound coming from the rear wheel area but could not be sure what I was hearing, but by the time I got to my destination I noticed the Check Engine light was lit and by display shows TRACTION CONTROL OFF. So I called my dealership and made an appointment to bring it in after they assured me that it was safe for me to drive it until I could bring it in. However on the day of service the "check engine" light and the TC off message was gone, so they tell me that they can't diagnose an error if there is no error being displayed, which I think was "BS". So I take it back home and it seemed fine for a few days until I was on the highway again and it popped up on my screen again.

Now I noticed that some of you guys mentioned having installed a Hypretech Intersepter, which I don't have a clue what that is, but we never had that installed so that can't be the problem. We have returned it to the dealership and they are in the process of diagnosing it. I will post an update on the findings cause I am really hoping that this is not the beginning of the end of my truck. I love that truck.

Update - So I took my truck to a Toyota dealership and they ran a diagnosis of the problem. Their findings indicate that it's the Output Speed Senor that is bad. Part being ordered and scheduled to be installed. Let's hope that fixes the problem.

Good Morning, new to the forum. Just got in my truck to come to work and the Traction Control and Check engine light are on. Struggles to shift into 4th-5th gear. Just turned 80k. Experienced this over the winter and it seemed to correct itself after a couple days. Upstate NY winters are really cold and I just thought the truck was frozen. Any new news on what I should do? Thanks in advance.

Have there been any updates on this. Had the traction and check engine lights this morning. Didn’t notice an issue with shifting.

Bumping this up b/c my 2014 SR 4.6 with 100,444 miles is having this issue.

12 degrees outside. Just after midnight I leave work, start my truck up and Check Engine Light comes on and the display also reads Traction Control is Off.

So does the problem correct itself by disconnecting the battery for a while? Is it the Speed Sensor on the transmission?
