hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased a 2004 Tundra. The truck is great but has higher mileage. 265,000km to be exact.

I’ve noticed that the oil pressure drops to the 1/4 line when it’s at an idle, but increases to the normal operating range while driving or revving the motor. I don’t think this is a big problem (probably just wear on the engine) is there any known remedies to help the pressure? I’ve thought about a Lucas oil system treatment possibly? Thanks in advance!

It's normal, at idle oil pressure on the 4.7 is only spec'd at 5psi.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Glad that it’s normal! I was a little concerned as the rest of the truck is in such great condition! Thank you again.

There has been a lot of concern about low oil pressure at idle over the years.
My 2005 V8 Tundra has 38K miles on the clock and the oil pressure at idle is quite low on the gauge.

the idle oil pressure is low because of how the valve train on these trucks is designed. They dont need the higher oil pressure of other engines because theres no rocker arms to lubricate. the bottom end gets the oil it needs and a very light bit in the head at idle.

    4-5psi is normal.

Before I bought my 1st gen, the owner sent me pics and the first thing I noticed it was idling and how low the OP was. I googled it and that is actually how I found this forum lol.

If you notice, the oil pressure will be higher at cold startup until the oil heats up and becomes more viscous (lowering the pressure).

Yup, it spikes up quite a bit on a cold start but as the temp rises, it settles back down.
