I think I had decided it was what Sean needed, and was already typing my post before that. :D

Sean said he wanted somebody to show him through the first time. Nothing like watching a guy figure it out for himself the first time (and then again)...and make a youTube video while doing it. I think the contributor had read the SRM; his method was right on. He was thorough...gets a A+ as an educator. :D

Did they make you leave it? My dealer said it was an all day thing on my Tacoma. I said screw that and just did it myself. After jacking with trying the temp mode crap I just drained and filled with slightly more than I took out. I hit the output line and pan with a IR thermometer. I pulled the test plug and got a little trickle. Drove it for another 35k before selling and it drove perfect.

I drain into a pan and then use an empty 5 qt oil jug to measure it. I would not be concerned about what is left behind in the pan. The residual in the 5 qt oil jug will offset it and it is not enough to be concerned over. This is not rocket science. As far as spilling just be careful.

Do you need to refill while the truck is hot or temperature at a specific degree? Or is that just for checking the level? Just a little unsure if it will accept the oil into the pan without overflowing if it is not distributed throughout the system.

Also, what is your choice of transmission fluid, and how often do you like to service it?

You can drain and fill at any temp. I like to let it cool to avoid burns. Temp is just for checking level. Fill plug is well above fluid level. I have always used Toyota WS but I have heard that some others are compatible

I would drain at ambient temp, or cold. Refill with ambient. Fluids may measure differently at different temps.
Many use WS from toyota. I used Valvoline Max Life, many have used on here. Liked the idea of it being synthetic, do not believe WS is.
Think manual recommends 60k miles, could be wrong.

So no problem with adding a different type of transmission fluid on just a drain and fill? Did you do it multiple times to try and get all the old out? Or do you just do a typical drain and fill somewhat annually?

Do your research on compatable fluids, some are ok with the idea, some not so much. I have only done once. Drained Fluid looked good, will do again at 60k more miles. Believe once is adequate if done on regular frequency. If unknown service history or towing frequently some have done 2-3 times, at one week intervals or say 50-100 miles.

OK LOL last question. To refill, it seems everyone just pours what they’ve drained into an empty 5 quart jug. Do you guys then measure it further in a large measuring cup to get it precise? Or approximate good enough.

I'm going ask what might seem like a silly question:

Aside from a possible error in filling at the factory, what's wrong with a normal spill and fill with OEM fluid? Measuring the fluid can be something of a pain, but it really isn't that hard. As long as fluid in/out is the same temp, what's the need for paperclips and bailing wire to remove/replace roughly three quarts of fluid?

The problem is with "assuming" the existing fluid level is correct. If you KNOW the fluid level was correct initially, then some use this method. Since Toyota knows that transmissons are serviced by many, may be subject to leakage, and trucks change ownership, the assumption that the initial fluid level is correct can be totally wrong. Toyota anticipated this by providing a method to verify fluid level at a given temperature regardless of the service history.

Thanks for the reply. I am very much a buy/hold type when it comes to my vehicles (at least daily drivers), so honestly the thought of ownership changing hands and the opportunity for multiple hacks having at the transmission didn't even cross my mind. I mentioned in my intro thread that I'm looking pretty hard at an '18 CM that has under 21K on it, so it's very unlikely in my mind that the transmission has seen any tinkering. I'm sure it's possible that an error was made in filling it at the factory, but that would seem unlikely as well.

I don't think I'm all that old, but what's wrong with an old fashioned dip stick? Get off my lawn! :)
