I own a 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5 4.0 6 cylinder. I am in the process of purchasing a boat and have concerns about my truck pulling it. The weight of the boat with fuel and the trailer is roughly 3800lbs. The tow capacity from what I read is 4800lbs for automatic and 5000 for manual.

My concern is I am adding a class 3 hitch to the truck but I want to make sure this is not too much weight to pull without any issues. My real concern is pulling it out of the water on the ramp since my truck is 2WD.

Also do I need a regular taillight convertor or a powered taillight convertor? My truck did not come with the towing package of course.

Appreciate any help everyone. Happy to be part of the Toyota community.

Hey welcome! You will definitely be close on truck capacity but I think it is do-able. My concern would be what you mentioned; pulling the boat out of the water in 2wd. I live in NY so 4wd is a must and I haven't had a lot of experience with 2wd. But, I have seen people struggle at boat ramps with 4wd. Sorry I can't be more help but I figure I would at least comment to bump the thread.

Does the truck have the factory rear Limited slip?

You don’t want to be the guy that can’t pull out of the water or end up being dragged into the water.

This is the first 4wd truck ive had, and ive towed boats with all my trucks. Ive never put this truck into 4wd on the ramp. It does depend on the condition of the ramps you frequent. Ive been on a couple mossy ramps that I had to have people jump in the back of the truck for weight.

Edit: My previous truck was a 2wd 1st gen.

Boat ramps must suck in CO. I needed 4wd a lot, but the boats were a little bigger. Could be the reason.

Yeah my boat isn't that big. 5.5k lbs 21 ft. A lot of the ramps I use are grooved for drainage and traction. Smooth ones are a bit tougher.

On several occasions I've had to tow strap out two wheel drive Fords and Dodges off of already wet boat ramps. That's pulling my boat and trailer with a tow strap connect to their truck pulling their boat and trailer up the ramp. Tundra's rule.
