Retired LEO working in a California gun shop with a indoor range (rifle and pistol).
Not doing it for the cash, but for preoccupation and discounts. PART TIME

Alot of stuff going on/in the background. Learning alot. If you guys and gals have questions outside of prices (This isn't the place and probably breaks a rule or two) ask away.

Some odd ball things I've already seen.

    Shop dog
    9mm shot through P226 chamberered in 40
    Dehumidifiers in the vault
4k rounds per hour ammo machine
Why the. 50 Cal isn't allowed on the range
Biggest paperwork PITA the store makes 0 money on.
    State and Fed contradictions etc.
    Crazy PEOPLE

Best thing is talking to customers actually. Folks from Idaho, retired ATC guys, other retired Leo's, etc.

Yep.. You'll call California DOJ and they'll tell you different things based on who answers the phone. The ammo background has the website and the DOJ staff in a state of chaos. Lol

Its easy on our end but even leaving Jr out of a name can cause a rejection.

Of course the bayonet & flash hider would need to be replaced with a muzzle brake.

Regrettably they hacked off a large chunk.
The hi cap magazine debacle is living proof. (Active appeal)
The Californians that are pro 2nd are fighting tooth and nail and alot is being overturned. I hope this ammo nonsense is next.
Walk into a Macy's kitchen section and they have butcher knives sitting out in the open. Costco had an off duty shoot with a guy chasing people with a knife in the store. It's crazy heaped on crazy out here.. Lol

I will say.. even after 25 years of LE, I'm impressed with SOME of the families that have come in, utilized the range, practiced sound safety discipline and were courteous to staff and fellow gun owners. They are modest, polite and friendly.. AND SAFE.

    These folks are priceless

California and NY are in competition to see who can destroy the second the fastest.

Being Ex Leo are you exempt from most of the bans?

I only go to small ranges so maybe thats it but glad I never experienced it

I dont really go to public ranges anymore , if i can avoid it. 90% of the folks are safe and knowledgeable. its the 10% of them that are tacticool dipshits or seriously sketchy and need some training .
We have a chunk of property and im in the process of building a 100 meter range with a 180* dirt wall for CQB course.

    Yes and No.
I can CCW 50 state provided I annually qualify.
I can keep and carry concealed blue label firearms and HC mags but
can't buy new blue label firearms unless it's PPT (Private Party Transfer) But the catch is.. So can every other Californian and resident alien.
The whole thing is pointless though as the vast majority of states and citizens enjoy blue label or better and DON'T have their state government dictating the terms of their 2nd amendment rights.
The real answer is to move and have the rich fund their utopia.

If you buy ammo in California now, everyone gets a background. Some fail because the state DOJ. Has Mike vs Michael / Jr vs No Jr, etc

    The trap can handle .50
The ballistic paneling (each lane) can handle standard .50
The noise and pressure would receive too many complaints in the indoor range and potentially scare off shooters.

We allow shotguns in slug only and 30.06 as a max rifle.

Where I live there is a shop that sounds very similar to your's. Great selection, indoor range and outrageous prices. Every part of me wants to support a local business that supports the 2nd but every time I go to the range there is someone waving around a gun being unsafe or I get put in the lane next to a guy shooting a 44 mag.

    Not nearly enough room here!

MA is not very 2A friendly either. We are the only state with an outright ban on Glocks unless you are a LEO or have a shop that will bend the rules. Have a range similar to your, but you can shoot a 50. You just have to make arrangements with shop before hand, and they have one available for rent. I prefer my private club, but did go just to shoot the 50 to say I had.

We have an approved roster, hand guns must have a thumb safety and or a chamber loaded indicator, and pass testing at independent lab.

Funny enough, Glocks are on the approved roster, but there is the secret Attorney General roster that prohibits sale. Can’t say much more, don’t want the ban hammer coming down on me.
