The 2 months of back pain I would endure attempting to pick up that quarter says “strut right by that quarter with a smile”.

    The Tundra needs a V8.
I drove a 2.7l eco boost F150 for three years and it was “enough” power. It is a turbo, aluminum bodied truck and still struggled with hauling.
With the heavy Tundra a turbo v6 would probably still not be enough to propel it adequately, much less the Toyota 4.0. Most reviews say that it’s adequate but not outstanding even in a Tacoma. Not a suited engine for the task.

Power to weight ratio. You could compare the truck you’re looking at to other vehicles you’ve driven to help you decide.

If you want a Gen3, then go with a V8, especially if you're doing ANY hauling or towing.

As a daily driver in flat terrain, maybe OK, but you won't be doing any racing. I have the 4.6L rated @310 HP, and it is enough for my sedate driving habits in Gen3. I can't imagine a V6 in a Gen3 Tundra, and apparently neither could Toyota after they tried it. Last year for the V6 in a Tundra was 2014.

The 4.0l v6 is a venerable engine...nothing special but its reliable, long-lived and it can provide decent grunt. It's adequate for a vehicle with the size and GVWR characteristics of a 4runner or Tacoma...IMHO it makes absolutely no sense in a 1/2 ton pickup.

That v6 gets okay mpg....when its in a 4runner or midsized truck. When you load it up with lots of weight, or put it in a bigger truck, the mpg advantage goes right out the window. Get the v8.

    The ridgeline is a CAR.

The avalanche though is a half ton truck. It may be ugly as sin, but it is a chevy suburban 1/2 ton frame/engine and running gear

Never underestimate how much people will overestimate trucks.

I work with a guy who sent a bunch of us pictures of his F-150 with 4100 pounds (yes, over 2 tons) of tile in the bed of his truck. He then got all offended when we told him how irresponsible and dangerous that was, told us "Ford can handle that, sorry your Toyota Turd can't haul that much!" SMFH.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should! He sounds pretty smart LMAO! No doubt any half ton could put 4100 pounds in the back. Doesn’t mean it’s safe or good for the truck. Guy is a freaking clutch

Most F-150 owner's I know, will follow where Ford leads them and swallow what Ford feeds them. No thought, common sense or reasoning required. As long as they get rid of them every couple years, they can stay blissfully ignorant; just like Ford wants them:thumbsup::D

It literally took downloading the F-150 technical brochure from Ford for that year, finding his model and showing him the payload rating from Ford themselves (I think it was 1900 pounds) for him to concede that we were right.

The first truck I purchased was a 1993 V6 Yota pickup with manual transmission. That was an awesome truck and did everything I wanted to do! I can't say that it could tow a whole heck of a lot, maybe 2-tons?! Either way it was enough for me to tow a 2-place 4-wheeler trailer through the mountains or throw whatever I needed in the back for a long weekend with the mrs. pre-kids days (CAT CALL!).

The weight of the trailer was noticeable in the V6 whereas it doesn't even feel like it's there now that I stepped into a 5.7 V8. My only advice is to think about what you would do with a pickup in a few years (cab over camper, boat, travel trailer, haul heavy materials, etc.) and don't short yourself a truck that won't be able to keep up with your passions life or limit your fun... safe fun that is ... I wouldn't advise throwing 2-tons in the bed either ;)

Test drove a 4.7L V8, test drove the 4.0L V6 after, felt pretty much the same to me :notsure: Ended up taking the V6 home with me because it was in excellent condition and had impeccable service records. From what I've read those V6 engines have a great reputation as well. Been driving it for a few days now and it's been great for me! I don't know how most of you all drive, but this thing seems like it has plenty of giddy-up for me. I'm probably a lot more conservative on the gas pedal than most, I don't have any need to drive like a bat out of hell. It's a truck not a sports car. Has better throttle response than my DCT 1.6 turbo Tucson and no problem on the interstate on-ramps. This is my daily driver now and I have no regrets so far. So funny reading all the comments regarding egos and man-cards. Sounds like some of you vouch for the V8 for the self-image boost? Maybe it's because I'm a millennial that I don't really care what other people think about what I drive so long as it works for me:rofl:Thanks for all the input though! I seriously do appreciate hearing the honest pros and cons. It helped me make my decision.

I think your attitude is awesome. I’ll bet the V6 would suit lots of our needs, we just enjoy the luxury of the powerful 5.7

Heck, the majority of truck owners in my area never even haul anything in their beds.

Enjoy your new ride and the dollar savings from your purchase!
