Been debating buying matching door handles or just plasti-diping my chrome handles, plasti-dip was going to be my choice until I started the removal process. Started with rear passenger side door but ran into one big issue; does the torx head screw come all the way out? I had it pretty loose and handle cap was not moving much so thinking the screw may have to be backed out completely.

Is this the case? Just a bit concerned that the screw could easily fall down into the door and then I would be in a bad spot. TIA for any advice.

    It won’t fall. I did a write-up on it.

Thanks for the replies though still not sure I want to take it on as two posters to the write-up said they lost their screws. I guess I will wait for the day the chrome just gets the best of me and I decide time to go.

It’s not that hard, I wouldn’t abondon the project yet. There’s a couple you tube videos on it as well. Color matching the handles and mirror caps completely changed the look of my truck. It’s definitelty worth it IMO.

Thanks for the moral support. Agreed it does not look hard to do, just don't want to lose that darn screw in the door. I color matched my mirror covers and front grill, I have a 1794 but like the color matched front of the Platinum, and now I am just thinking of going with black Plastidip on the handles to match the tinted windows and black side steps. I think it will look better than the chrome, I guess I need to trust the numbers as way more have done the mod sucessfully, only two reported losing the screw into the door abyss.

I know a lot of people have done the plastidip but if you’ve already spent the money on a nice 1794 along with the rest of the color matched parts, I’d do it right the first time with the handles. I’m honestly not sure how those folks got the screw out. I loosened it pretty good and it stayed in there good. Maybe use a magnetic driver just to be safe?
Personally, the grill and mirror caps were more challenging than the handles. Good luck either way!

I did this yesterday. Had the same concern, they did not fall out. I turned the one for a long time while pulling on the cap, they are in there. Trust me.

    Two pieces of advice.
    1. Use a plastic trim tool to help pry the caps off, they can be a little stubborn.
    2. ALWAYS have a hand on the cap. I dropped one of the painted ones while trying to put the screw back in and it chipped the paint on it. I'll be ordering a replacement today, due to my moment of buffoonery.

But, it's so easy. And it made a HUGE difference in how my truck looks.

I just did mine yesterday. I too was worried the screw would fall but trust everyone when they say it won't. I swapped everything out and my mirror caps in about 25 minutes. Easy work.

As long as the plastic retainer is not damaged (or you bend it during removal). Had a screw fall into the door cavity because the retainer was damaged.

Guess what? I was on the last handle and the torx screw DI fall out. The retainer must have been damaged from the factory. I had a magnetic head on the screw driver and as I pulled the cap off gravity took its course. Now I've got a problem that is going to be unfun to deal with. Word to the wise. If there are any ideas out there they would be much appreciated.

That door panel is super easy to remove. It’ll take you 30 minutes max.
