So I looked in the 3rd Generation Audio/Video thread and there seems to be "no definite solution" with Entune and IPhone text messaging features.
I have an IPhone 6s and I can use the "phone features" without isssue. I can't not receive incoming text messages on the Entune system.
When I use voice recognition button "Text Wife Mobile Number" the system replies with your current phone features do not allow text SMS capabilities.

Anyone else have this issue? Solution.

PS - My wife has an XLE Sienna with the premium Entune system and I can't get text messages on that vehicle either.

U can't send, but can receive text on Entune. I would have to research how again. I used to keep that feature, but turned it off. Got old for me

Delete your saved texts on your phone and try the set up again. Had the same problem, this fixed it.

Just the initial set up. From what I understand it's a data transfer issue. If you have a lot of old texts on your phone Entune can't handle the set up. Not saying this is your problem, but it was mine. Like Sean said though, it gets old pretty quick.

Deleted all my messages... Did the "Forget Connection" option on phone. I re-paired the phone and it connected via Bluetooth and it paired Toyota Tundra. The phone contacts all showed up but still can't finish the set-up process for messages. I'm gonna go check some websites.

I will keep you all posted

You probably did what we all did... played sports. I kind of miss the days before all this technology. Kids these days will never know what it's like to be a real kid.

All the people who'd I'd probably be texting would be crammed in my car singing, laughing, and drinking beer.

I have an iPhone6 and used to receive audible notification of texts and could have them play over the speakers. After upgrading to iOS 10.x.x, it stopped working. I tried un-pairing, removing the phone and pairing again, but it didn't help. I'm going to call Toyota Entune and see what they say.
According to their compatibility list, they are only compatible with iPhone6 to iOS 9.x. Hmmm

UPDATE: I ended up sending an email to Entune "central" and they responded with what @louscrw showed below by setting "notifications" on in the Bluetooth settings. This did not fix my problem. And yes, I tried deleting all of my message and phone call history. No change...

Decided to troubleshoot using my iPhone6 on iOS10 and my wife's iPhone6 on iOS9. I deleted the Entune app on my iPhone and deleted the TOYOTA Tundra device on my iPhone Bluetooth setting. Then, I went to the Tundra and deleted my iPhone6. Next, I added my wife's iPhone6 (set up phone and messaging) and texted between the iPhones. Wife's iPhone had same symptom - nada, nothing. I turned off iMessage; no change. Just for grins, I turned off "MMS Messaging" AND IT WORKED!! iMessaging back on, it worked...

So then I re-paired my iPhone6 on iOS10 and it now works too. Bluetooth connection, iMessage on, MMS Messaging turned off and it works. Just to be clear, I made sure the Phone settings AND Messaging settings in Entune were setup - my iPhone is set up as a phone and audio device in Entune settings.

So, on a 2016 Tundra Platinum with Entune Premium, text messaging through the radio DOES work via Bluetooth. The weird thing is that it worked a month ago before I updated my iPhone and received the Entune update - still puzzling.

Now for SENDING TEXTS hands free via Bluetooth...using the "Mobile Assistant" The Mobile Assistant feature will activate Apple’s Siri® Eyes Free mode via the steering wheel switches. This is in the Navigation System Owners Manual on page 132. Mobile Assistant is accesses by pressing and holding the top button on the right side of the steering wheel that looks like a phone that is "off-hook".
I waited for it to beep and then said, text <my wife> "message". Siri responded with the message and "ready to send?". I said, "yes" and it was sent. Wife responded that she got the message. No cable needed, just Bluetooth and Siri!

    OP @MartyWI -

I can receive texts through the system and play it through speakers. I think downloading the entune app to your phone (junk app) will facilitate this. Not sure. As far as sending texts: if your iPhone is plugged into USB / charging you can use the "hey Siri" feature and the entune unit essentially initiates a phone call to yourself / phone where you can send texts look up waypoints etc through Siri. Pretty useful sometimes, imo.

I am not an iPhone user so this might not be much help...
All my Samsungs played nice with all my trucks. Texts would alert and be read aloud through the trucks. Now I (still)have a Motorola Droid Turbo and the truck is mute for texts. All phone functions still work, just no texts.
The system in these trucks is wonky.

On the iPhone, do the following:
    - Open settings
    - Click on Bluetooth
    - Click the little "i" next to your vehicle
    - Turn on "Show Notifications"

This will allow your texts to be displayed on your radio screen and read when the vehicle in not in motion. While driving, they will be read to your through the speakers.

Unfortunately, iPhones do not support the protocol that allows you to send texts via the head unit.

    THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

Yup I needed to "clear" all current text message conversations but I was also missing the "Show Notifications" ON; however, the iPhone MUST also be connected with the HDMI cable in the HDMI Jack located near the Entune system.

    Works now

    THANKS AGAIN

Probably the USB port below the Entune system. I don't think that HDMI is an option with the Tundra (at least a factory option.)

    USB... sorry

For the initial setup you need to "empty" text message conversations, turn on notifications in the Bluetooth setting and it works.

My messaging was initially working fine, then it wouldn't read the messages back and now doesn't receive them at all. Bluetooth setting are correct. Do I need to clear all old messages in my phone? I have no saved messages in the entune system.

See my post #12 above...Mine was working too. It worked fine under IOS9.X, but then it stopped working after I went to IOS10.X. Tried clearing everything, un-pairing and re-pairing, no messages. Then I tried my Wife's phone. Her iPhone was still on IOS9.X and it stopped working too. And then I remembered that Entune did an update, so I just kept trying different settings. To make a long story short, I turned off "MMS Messaging" AND IT WORKED!! iMessaging back on, it worked...
And I did not have to clear all of her phone's messages or anything else, just turned off MMS in the Messaging Settings on the iPhone.

Same issue in my 2017 Platinum. THANKS to @ChucklesToy for stumbling on to the fix. Now it works fine, just as when I first paired my phone.
