Was informed this morning that my water pump is leaking at 100,000. This is my third Tundra also had three Tacoma's and three 4 Runners. Not accustomed at all to having these type of issues . I have changed oil, tires and done basic services for 20+ years and rolled many miles. Any others of you experiencing this premature failure of water pumps on Gen 3 Tundras?

You’ve got 100 K on your 2017? I know on the first GEN Tundra’s they suggest replacing the water pump when the timing belt is done at 90 K. So if you’ve got 100,000 miles on your water pump, it’s probably within its expected life cycle. But it’s not uncommon for them to go much longer than that. You may have just got a lame water pump.

Yes actually 110k as of this morning. I cover 4 states in food service distribution and do the hunting club trips on the weekends so my vehicles are fully utilized!

I guess you have to chalk it up to wear and tear and a little bit of a fluke that it went earlier than you thought it would. Hopefully you get 200 K out of the next one!

Yeah I have just never had to replace one on any of the vehicles whether 100k or 300k. Oh well...I least I don't have to fix stuff all the time like other brands. Thanks.

Yeah, the last time I replace the water pump was on my 64 Oldsmobile F 85. That was 20 years ago and I don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of miles LOL

It seems like years ago on say an old 350, water pumps were replaced every 100 K.

I changed a couple of SB Chevys at ~50K miles back in the day. They were on the front of the engine and were easily changed. They at least had that going for them.

Water pump life is heavily dependent on cooling system maintenance history. One of those SB Chevys I changed was purchased used from a guy that ran raw water in the cooling system for months because it ran hot and would blow all the coolant out. He saw no point in continuing to invest in antifreeze. I thought I could fix it. Rust or scale in the coolant scores the seal insert, pump begins to leak, and you need a new water pump.

Otherwise, with good cooling system maintenance, a water pump should last until the bearings, or the seal, reaches end-of-life. The impeller shaft vibrates from bad bearings, ceramic seal insert cracks, pump leaks, need a new water pump. Water pumps may last more than 100K miles if well-maintained and well-manufactured; beyond 100K is gravy imo.
