I wholeheartedly disagree with this policy change. It’s not only confusing (no automatic birthright but can apply for naturalization?), but it also serves to demoralize our troops stationed at overseas military bases with their wives and families. It adds an unnecessary burden of paperwork (and presumably the several hundred dollar naturalization fee) to a child born at a US military hospital overseas through no fault of its own.

It kind of smacks as a penalty or punishment for a service member sent to an overseas military base carrying out his/her duty to protect our country. It sends the wrong message to our troops overseas and those state-side who may get sent overseas.

Let me add that I’m biased since I’m a former military dependent. I was fortunate enough to have been born in the US, but my Dad was later drafted during the Vietnam War in ‘69 when I was 3 years old. My Dad then served 3 years in the Army, and later 17 years in the Air Force. Growing up as a kid following my Dad around from base to base, I got to meet quite a few other kids (fellow military dependents) who were born at overseas US military hospitals, such as in Japan and Germany.

I think it’s very unfair for overseas military parents who now have to go through the added expense and red tape to apply for naturalization for their kids who then happen to be born while serving overseas.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. I suppose it includes foreign service officers, diplomats and any other American government employee serving our country overseas.

I read it again. And it made me even more disgusted. I am not a military man nor are any immediate family members, but I do support our troops and an grateful for them, this is a slap in the face to all of those who serve our country abroad.

    It’s being said in PM.
Hopefully here everyone can be civil. I just posted it because it affects some members here, and hoped we could have a good discussion like we have in the Deadly Force thread.

I do not believe that this is a policy that tRump can take arbitrarily without congress acting and taking a vote to change the law. By now we should all be aware that tRump will say anything he wants without the necessary thought process, his mouth moves without consulting his brain.

Good question, but even if it is, I doubt our embassies have hospitals with maternity wards. Most likely the government employee will have the baby at the host country’s hospital.

It has to be or it'll get locked down. This discussion should be able to carry on without people discussing particular ppl or injecting their views on politics rather than their views for this issue at hand. For me I think it's great to have this info out there , so people like myself can learn and form my own opinion

This is ridiculous. Should never happen like that, hopefully never gets implemented. We should be thanking folks for their service rather than implementing this stupid policy for serving folks.

If I’m reading the military.gov article the OP posted, it sounds like this policy change wasn’t made via a Trump tweet but instead was made by USCIS to supposedly align more with US State Department procedures. Granted, the buck stops with the President when an Executive Branch agency decision is made. Be that as it may, I still disagree with the decision.

No doubt. I can see this being more of a problem for those in US military bases equipped with hospitals or those serving in wealthy, developed countries with good health care. But those serving in countries with poor health care will probably be taking leave and having their babies back home in the US anyway.

Completely apolitical... but this is direct from Military Times. Long live the era of statesmanship... long live the legacy of the McCains/Mattis/Powell’s of the world....

    From Military Times:

Children born to — or adopted by — some U.S. service members overseas are no longer automatically considered U.S. residents or entitled to U.S. citizenship, according to the policy.

“This policy update does not affect anyone who is born a U.S. citizen, period," Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigrant Services, said in a statement.

“This only affects children who were born outside the United States and were not U.S. citizens.”

    Examples of that situation include:
    • A U.S. service member and partner, or a dual-military couple, stationed in South Korea, who adopt a local South Korean child; or,
    • A non-citizen U.S. service member and partner, or non-citizen dual-military couple, who have a child while serving in Germany.
In either case, the children would no longer be considered residents (based on their parents’ established U.S. residency) and must apply for citizenship, rather than have it guaranteed, as it would have been guaranteed in the past.

The policy won’t affect children born to U.S. citizens serving abroad. Those children are still entitled to automatic citizenship, officials said.

Some media outlets are cutting and pasting what they want people to perceive on this without citing the whole enchilada. It is pretty easy to see if you look for and read the reason behind why this was done.

After reading, sounds like this is intended for non citizen US service members. This reminds me of the birthright citizenship abolishment law that is currently in the works.
