So I have a new 2016 and noticed when at a traffic light for a period of time that the rpm will kick up, maybe 200 rpms, then drop down to its original idle. I have the AC, Stereo going and its been hot (98 - 102 degrees F) and humid. Just wondering if Toyota has some type of advance idle system programmed into the vehicle.

It's probably bumping the idle up a little when the A/C cycles on and creates a greater load. Power steering can trigger the same bump, particularly if you were to saw the steering wheel when parked.

My 2016 does the same thing. I have tried A/C on/off, no steering wheel inputs.....same. My truck also idles "rough" when it goes into lower idle. My first '16 I got back in February I do not recall this as I'm fairly OCD and would have noticed I think as I picked up on this one within 2 days of getting it in May. 3 dealerships, no help. Love my truck, hate this.

What fuel and octane are you using?

8150 currently, use name brand fuel, 93 octane. It's done it from day 1 pretty much.

Just curious what happened to your first '16 and why you got a new one?

Are you supercharged? Wondering why your running 93 octane.

    Dealership no help huh?

Run 93 in everything. Mowers/quads/ and now the truck, I did run 87 in it(from Exxon) one time and it had quite a bit of clatter/detonation laying into it getting on the freeway.

    Really?

Not saying you didn't experience that, but our trucks adjust for timing. I am at your elevation and much higher and have never experienced spark knock.

I would get a diagnostic check on your truck. Something doesn't sound right, and using premium on a truck that requires 87 octane gets expensive (as I'm sure you already know).

Like @ColoradoTJ said required is 87/89 which ever you can get but technically you should be able to run any grade gasoline in a modern engine since they all now due to emissions requirements have to have knock sensors. The knock sensor should allow the ECM to adjust the timing that you don't notice a detonation knock.

I completely agree with no "need" but like I said previous it's old habit from previous cars and the toys. All 3 of these dealers have scanned it as well as my personal shop that has taken care of my diesel trucks for the past 15 years and nothing comes up. I appreciate all the suggestions. I too was extremely surprised to hear it as well as it's been 20years since turning the timing too high on the fox body mustangs but that's exactly what it sounded like.....

So weird. Well you have done what I would have. If this is your biggest problem with your Tundra, your livin the dream.

Is the norm idle RPM for the Tundra 600?
