Wife and I are retiring to Florida in a couple years from California. I know, I know... But at least we aren't tourists. How do you folks deal with hurricanes? It seems like you buy a ton of flood and wind insurance, buy a hardened house, and hope the insurance people don't commit fraud or slow/underpay when disaster strikes.
Just don't want the drama as a Retiree. Orlando suburbs seem safest from damage, but more worried about insurance flaking.

    Thanks
    Steve

Start with reputable insurance companies and see if they are offering coverage. Ask about past claims they have paid, etc. Check with the locals too.

Make sure home comes with shutters, etc. Make sure you are not in a flood zone or that could be worse than a hurricane since Orlando is further inland.

I live in Windermere. I have a wood frame house with wood siding and pool cage. Never had an issue with hurricanes. I was born and raised in Soouth Florida never had an issue with em there either. When the streets would flood from hurricanes we would just drive our John boats down the street. In cent. Fla. a good whole house generator and ice and water will get you through most anything. Mostly tree damage here.

Generator, hurricane shutters, decent gas grill with a side burner and extra tanks, garage fridge full of beer, and you're set.

Agree 120%. I've lived all over FL , through quite a few hurricanes, and it always comes down to a generator, ice, chainsaw, and gas grill.

Former Florida homeowner checking in here. Specifically lived in Clermont which is a suburb of Orlando. I was never concerned with home owners insurance for Hurricanes. The bigger concern was sinkholes. My home owners was never very expensive either. I would recommend Flood if there is any doubt but we didn't carry it. You have to remember that Florida is a huge state so it's rare that the same places get hit over and over. The area where my family lives(Sarasota/Brandenton) hasn't been hit by a major hurricane in like 40+ years.

Good god though, Orlando sucks. It's a giant swamp without the ocean breeze. High humidity, miserable traffic, high crime. Our neighborhood in Clermont was seeing home burglaries during the middle of the day while people were at work. Even the gated community across the street was having the same issue. There are so many other parts of Florida I would recommend. I would challenge you to keep looking.

Follow all of the advise given in previous replies and pay attention to local forecasting while ignoring all of the national news hype about any storm that may or may not be approaching. Also, if you live in the path of a storm like Andrew - leave.
