Had mine installed at the dealership before purchasing the truck. Many members have added it themselves so I am sure someone will chime in shortly...

Do a search for DIY pop n lock. It take about and hour and less than $30 worth of material. You can also get am extra actuator, a popper, and some kind of relay and make it so not only does it lock and unlock, but you can open the tailgate remotely, it's very cool.

DIY pop and lock. Takes no time at all.
I’ve since installed it on my dads tundra, my uncles tundra and my brother-in-law’s Tacoma (same handle)

This is just to lock and unlock the tailgate. It doesn't unlatch the tail gate

There is a mod that you can unlatch and open it with a remote. He is referring to that.

Thanks for the reply’s, I ordered a diamondback bed cover and an electronic tailgate lock seems ideal. Not sure why this isn’t a standard option from the factory. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction, I’ll get one ordered.

It is available as Toyota accessory for $289 MSRP. See Toyota.com, Build and Price, Accessories. I believe it is installed by the dealer, but it makes no sense to go that route. They are using the same Pop-n-Lock kit you can buy from Amazon for about one third the price, and it's a simple DIY.
