Hotter than two rats screwing in a burlap bag here. Go to lunch and had happened to put my sunglasses up in the holder when I had gotten out this morning.

They were REALLY hot. It was instinctual to just put them on. Bad move.

I reach up in the holder and there is nothing in there but the bare metal of the cab roof.

    Burned my hand again.

    Any ideas on insulating it?

Ha! I thought about this too a while back, was thinking about that insulation with that silver lining, I have this at work, machine I operate has hydraulic lines next to my knee and it's gets hot, mechanics got this stuff at Napa, it's about 1/8" or 1/4" thick

At some point, I'd like to use this to insulate the whole roof under the headliner. There's nothing insulative under the headliner. Kinda surprised me when I had the headliner edges down to install my roof rack. Would help with cooling down the cab on those crazy hot summer days. Next project! :woot:

I pulled down the overhead console to see what we could work with space-wise; I don't think there is anywhere to put insulation. The sunglass holder is bolted flat against the metal support. Any ideas?

Just 4 T15 screws. You'll need to pull the card holder/clip and trim for 2 of them, and the other two are inside the sunglass holder.

Couldn't put it between the metal. That is a box beam and you can't get behind at the front above the glass holder.

I just grabbed some radiant barrier for metal roofing from our warehouse. Basically bubble wrap with foil on one side. Cut it into two pieces, stuck it in the hole foil side up, and screwed the trim piece back in. Plenty of room. Finally put in my LED bulbs while I was at it.

Two pieces seemed like a better fit but I may end up just making it one piece.

I'll find out tomorrow if it makes any difference.

you lost R value when you compress the insulation, but should be better then nothing

That stuff is maybe R1 to begin with. The idea here was strictly reflection of heat. I hope it helps a little bit. I used a similar material called reflectix as part of my sound deadening and it seemed to help with heat around the transmission tunnel area. Is basically foil lined bubble wrap, the stuff I used was foil on both sides but looks very similar

It didn't pinch. Actually tightened up snug against the headliner before screws could snug the bezel against the mounts. So no it didn't lose the R value.

And damnit, I forgot to look to see what that small vent is for that is on the front of that bezel.

Great thread! My Wife forgot her sunglasses and I gave her my emergency pair that has been in there for at least 6 months. They were extremely hot.
