Previous employer i had drove a 2018 cummins diesel Ram 2500. I worked for him for about a year, and he had to replace his tranny twice. First time at only 500 kms. Then his bluetooth in his head unit went, which was the only reliable way to contact the guy. His buddy also drove the same truck and also replaced his tranny within a year. He sold his and bought a ford. The dodge people i know tend to only keep their trucks for 1-3 years. Trash in 7-8 years.

I wouldn't buy a RAM based solely on the fact that their commercials are stupid as hell. They're also a Dodge. And that's just gross.

Because they made it at a minimum a $55,000 pickup that was ugly and didn't have an 8' bed option. If they would have had stripped down work truck configurations available that contractors and other professionals could have used, then they might have had a little market saturation that, if they proved decent vehicles, would have led to more sales of the cushy luxury models.

But I also heard that the diesels got no better mileage than most gas-powered full-sized pickups. I used to love Nissans 20 years ago. They have turned into Mitsubishi.

My coworker did his SW trip from Vancouver WA to Idah, through Grand Canyon, to Southern Ca and back up I5, he averaged 19MPG. He hand calculates too and keeps everything in Fuely.

    Drives a 2017 ecoboost.

I would expect better, my 2016 Silverado gets constant 21 MPG from Vancouver to CA and back, if It weren't for me needing a crew cab for my growing family I would've kept the ext cab.

As for Dodge sales, fraudulent test results on MPG to get sales (like volkswagen), google the complaints about MPG. Getting some averages of 14mpg like my Tundra, and its 15/22mpg, no 13/17mpg.

You have to go to a website like Fuelly.com in which there are thousands of ecoboost owners tracking mileage...

    http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/f-150/2017?engineconfig_id=102&bodytype_id=&submodel_id=

    The average is 16.4 mpg.

The 2019 Ram with the 5.7 is averaging 15.8 mpg...

    http://www.fuelly.com/car/ram/1500/2019?engineconfig_id=19&bodytype_id=&submodel_id=

So, the bottom line is, based on averages, the most fuel efficient half-ton pickup with around 400hp is the F-150 with the Ecoboost at 16.4 mpg. The worst is the Tundra at 13.97 mpg. Your'e talking a 2.5 mpg advantage, which is pretty negligible for most folks.

Compare reliability ratings and current deals and the Tundra is the clear winner for me. Local dealer has a Cavalry Blue 2019 SR5 4wd for $33k. It is calling my name, lol.

Correct numbers, cause I have owned both or did with the Silverado But freeway driving is much closer to 21. Mixed does get around 16-17.

That's not really true anymore. I live in the Permian basin, I see as many fleet Tundras now as I do any other truck outside of F150. I would bet money that Toyota fleets MORE trucks than Ram which has never really caught on with any company that I can think of (in the 1/2 ton class at least, their Cummins HD trucks are popular with companies that haul frequently).

Our household is vehicle crazy and we are constantly looking at other vehicles; lately we’ve been truck shopping. Currently have a paid off, heavily modified 2016 powerwagon. A high level trim new Ram diesel leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately an F-150 also leaves much to be desired for towing and value. An F350 is intriguing but more truck than we need. The truck market is so damn expensive.

Funny this is the dilemma I am in, RAM vs Toyota. I will buy a new truck within the next 9 months, probably a 2020 model. I have had a couple Toyota's and although sometimes a little Blah they have always been great vehicles, my 1995 Land Cruiser was a tank.

I will do an evaluation of all ½ ton trucks on the market and make my decision. Right now, on paper, it will either be a Tundra or a RAM Rebel. I love that in every ½ truck in 2020, except Toyota, you can get a diesel which I have wanted for a long time and rear lockers. (Power Wagon would be my ultimate choice but I cant justify the size, MPG and price)

When I compare them, the RAM wins in every category except two, two very important category’s. Resale and more importantly reliability. If it wasn’t for those two things, it would be an easy decision and I would go buy the RAM and be done with the mental anguish of deciding on a new car. But, those two items are very important to me and ultimately will probably push me towards Toyota.

Don’t get me wrong I really do love Toyota products but the other manufactures build a really nice product with lots of versatility. RAM boxes, lot of in-floor storage, great center counsel, rear lockers (come on Toyota at least do this one), better suspension, cool looks, entertainment system and features, etc., etc.

I just wish Toyota would starting getting a little more creative in their design and features. If they ever lose the top spot for reliability they are toast.

Again, it may not sound like it but I really do love Toyota products, that is why I am on this forum. But it is not an easy decision to make. The great thing about Toyota resale is you can always trade it in a few years for something else and do just fine on the trade.

Right now I am trying to narrow down on the Tundra model I want. I want the TRD Pro, but I don’t think it is offered with heated seats which is a deal killer for my wife. So a Limited or 1794 edition, and change out the shocks and springs? That will probably get me to something I want. Do many guys install air lockers?

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I just bought a new Tundra and it was between Tundra and F150. I liked the F150, but damn they are expensive for a similarly equipped truck.

It seems like that’s dependent on your region. My SR5 with TRD package was $38k. I can go get an XL STX f150 with more options than my truck for $32ish.

I had a 2016 Ram Laramie crew cab 5.7 liter that I bought used with only 11,000 miles. Three check engine lights popped up and the fender flares started coming off, I had my doubts about longevity. Truck was in the shop constantly. With the 3 year warranty fixing to expire, I sold it with 19,000 miles 10 months later. I had nightmares on paying for repairs out of warranty. Bought my 2017 Tundra Limited 5.7 liter last month and haven't looked back. Piece of mind with Toyota reliability goes a long way. Just my two cents worth.

Guy at work cruised into the shop in his wife's vehicle for like the 20th time in the two years I've worked there because his 2017 Ram is in the shop again. No thanks.

Edit: In fact, his wife took it to Texas last week and she ended up in a rental for the entire trip. The Ram spent the trip at the dealer in Texas!

I stopped by the local Ford dealer, where I have X-Plan access due to my company buying a ton of vehicles from them, on my way to the Toyota dealer.

I told them I needed a truck with seating for 5, could tow 10k lbs, had at least a 6.5' bed, 400hp, and was under $40k.

The salesman looked down at his feet and apologized; didn't even try to compete with the Tundra I wanted at $36k.

Better buy 5.7 liter while you can. Been talking to several employees at Toyota plant here in Huntsville, fixing to phase out 5.7 and going to twin turbos like Ford has.
