The OP has a 14 so your manual is most likely different than his.

They do change them slightly from year to year. Maybe not in this regard but they do change the ECM, program and components. Which is one of the reasons you can't get a SC with the 18 and 19 yet.

I put in exactly 8 it’s at the full mark. I’m just going to stick with that.

The manual changed over the years, my '14 had 7.9 and my '18 has 8.5 both 5.7.

You definitely don't want to over fill your engine with oil. It's always best to put in the amount the owner's manual says, then drive it around for a few days, then check the oil again and see what the dipstick says. If you need to top it off, then ok, but that shouldn't be more that half a court I'd think, at most.

I changed my oil and filter not to long ago on 19' 5.7 and it took every bit of 8.5 quarts to get to full and that is what manual states also.

OK so little update and I believe I found what was going on. I have driven a lot since that oil change ( supposedly 9.5 quarts) and have been checking oil religiously on that time. After I got that oil change I went home and park my truck, when I came back out (few hours later) I looked under the truck and boy was I pissed. There was oil all over my drive way, skid plate, literally blasted from engine to rear diff. The techs who changed my oil spilled AT LEAST half a quart refilling the engine. I belive the truck is at 8.5 quarts, but had to charge me the extra quart on paper to not have a loss on there oil change!? So far almost 1k miles down no more leaks after I wiped the undercarriage clean and dip stick/ oil pressure is reading within specs/normal

Are you guys that are putting in 8 showing it coming in just a tad above the full dot? Just a teeny bit above full dot is what mine is showing. I haven’t driven it down the road just warmed it up in the driveway since I’ve changed it if that makes any difference. Gonna have the wife drive it to work tomorrow and see what it levels out at.

I put 8 in mine and that’s how mine is showing.

Also I’m just curious of the reasoning to check oil after it’s at the operating temperature rather than cold? I guess the checking it cold is an old school thing.

Yeah it seems silly to me too. You would think after sitting overnight it would be the most accurate. I can only assume that the oil may expand a bit when it comes to temperature as well as being distributed through the oiling system. Like filling up the oil canister etc. But it still doesn’t make sense to me because you would think that would be inconsistent.

Can any of you who have had the 5K service done tell me what it says in the description on your paperwork or in the Toyota owners app? Just had the rotation done and the wording is kinda misleading. I specified for them not to change the oil since I had done that myself.

A half quart more or less isn’t going to make a bit of difference.

I only put in 7.9345 qts. The remaining I use for lubrication on my guns....

    I was onto your jest...

I think you’re the first 2020 poster that I’ve seen/responded to, so I had to play with the fact you posses a future model year in 2019.

Pic is from the '18 owners manual. I am sure the owners manual from my old '14 was 7.9.

Thought I'd add to this. I have a 2020 and 8 quarts with filter change puts it right at the top mark on the stick. Really confused by what the manual recommends (8.5 quarts) and all the owners that have varying amounts...7.5, 8, 8.5?? I'm going by the stick level. Could these cam seal leaks be caused by overfilling?

Are you running the engine immediately after the oil change, then checking the dipstick again, or are you changing the oil and filter, putting 8 qts in and looking at the dipstick? Perhaps if you run the engine for a little while, immediately after the putting in the 8 quarts and new filter, the dipstick will show that the oil is a little low?

Of course I’m running the truck after changing the oil and filter before checking. In fact, I currently have 7600 miles since the last oil change (8 quarts of Amsoil) and the level is maybe 1/16” off the full mark. I also use the TRD Performance Oil filter’s, but doubt that would make a difference.

For me, it will be 8 quarts every time as I will go by the stick, not the manual.

Not trying to stir the pot ( okay, maybe a little ). But couldn't the way the oil is changed affect how much you put back in. When I do mine at home I pull up on a set of ramp, so the fumoto valve is lower so more oil has a change to be drained. I also start draining and let it go until NOTHING more comes out. ( usually about a beer ). At a jiffy lube type place, you pull in over a pit so vehicle is level and I am sure they drain till most is out and then button it back up. They don't have time to get every last oz of oil out. As long as it is filled back up to the full line, does it matter exactly how much is put back.

I have a 2017 Tundra 5.7 BA model. In changing the Oil and Filter I went with 8.5 quarts. Tip: In drainage mode towards the end, I Run “compressor air” though the Oil stick tube, real easy like. This pushes every last drop of dirty oil out fast and controlled.
    Let the games begin!

My '16 manual says 7.9 qts w/ oil filter change, did not know the later manuals specify 8.5 quarts, hmmm.

I dump a 5 qt jug and 3 smaller quarts in it without looking. It reads about a half quart low between the dots on the dipstick, hmmm. Which has always irritated me, lol.
I'll try 8.5 from now on...which is convenient because I'm about to change the 4Runner oil that requires 6.6 quarts, I have somewhere to dump that extra half quart now!
