This toilet is about 8 years old and I just noticed black rubber sticky chunks in the bowl. Do these seals just go bad like this or is there something wrong with the water that is eating the seal?

They go bad over time. That’s normal. Cut the water supply off, pull the tank and put in a whole new assembly. You can get an entire replacement piece with new valve for $20 at hone depot.

Be sure to drain it, after turning the supply off.

You have chlorinated municipal water, don't you?

Find replacement parts that tolerate chlorine.

No need. It will self drain when he removes the old assembly.

I’ve seen that many times. Just get a new flush valve and tank to bowl bolts with tank to bowl washer. Luckily that looks like a universal flush valve. Very common.

Disclaimer: I’m not a plumber or a scientist.

All I know that when you start taking parts off of toilets, they drain themselves. Kind of pointless to do it ahead of time, if you ask me.

That must be one of those toilets that has a number 1 or number 2 flush LOL

The part to the left is for the full flush and the flush valve to the right is adjustable for a urine flush.

That’s very normal. As long as its not leaking just ignore it. I’ve seen them almost entirely deteriorate without leaking. If you try to tighten or mess with it though they could crumble and need to be replaced.

I knew we had a couple of plumbers here so I had to ask. It freaked me out because I was thinking what kind of chemicals are in the water to be able eat through a seal. We have city water. I have an account at a wholesale electric and plumbing supplier so I will get replacement parts for when I can get to it.
There was a post here about a flapper valve that looked like a brain tumor but I can't find the post. It was crazy looking.

That's the worst advice ever! Is it better for the water to go down the drain or all over the floor?!?

I would not fix until it starts to leak on the outside and get the water out of the tank before removing the inlet. That is unless you like wet floors. Toilets are heavy but not so much in 2 pieces. Be careful when reassembling the tank to the bowl. It is easy to crack something. I cracked the bowl on one where the tank sits. Fortunately it does not leak. Matching up the tank to bowl gasket can be a pain.

This looks like an earlyish American standard champion 4 flush valve. They had a run come out with a substandard rubber seal that basically melted over time, the only thing that generally needs replaced on those is the 4” rubber seal which can be found at Lowe’s or depot. The nice thing is you don’t even have to take the tank off to do it. Don’t try to replace that with a 2” universal flush valve as that will not fit the larger hole

They do degrade over time. I sometimes over test my seals, especially after eating Taco Bell.

You are supposed to that in the bowl not the tank. Company I worked for at one time shipped some homes to Israel to house Ethiopian immigrants. They thought toilets were for washing and drinking and did their business outside.
