As a recent Tundra purchaser, I'm trying to figure out why adding the TRD off road package reduced my wheel size. I got the Limited trim which comes with a 20" wheel. However, the TRD off road package reduces this to an 18" TRD wheel. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep a 20" wheel for better ground clearance on an off road vehicle?? I had 20" wheels on my F-150 years ago and they looked great. I'm afraid when I go to get new shoes for the truck, I'm going to wish I had 20" wheels to allow me to get bigger shoes!! Maybe someone has a logical answer here. Thanks in advance.

My new to me 14 Limited TRD has 18" rims which negates the 20" rims on a non TRD Limited for good reason. 20" rims suck if you off road...17" even better. Rims don't give you ground clearance. Tires and decent lift does. More rubber the better with appropriate lift. Better tire selection with 18's, even better with 17's

Wheel size is not important for ground clearance. Tire diameter is. Here is the metric formula for a 275/65/18. 275/25.4x2x.65+18. 25.4 is number of centimeters in one inch. You can buy virtually any diameter tire for any rim size. For off roading it is normally better to have more rubber/sidewall to protect rim's and air down if you want to. I did not want 20s but I wanted the BFGs. Tires were more important to me. When I replace the tires I have I will go with larger diameter and more sidewall. I was concerned about the 20s on the ranch I hunt because of rocks but so far no problems.

My only guess is the limited is for a more on road use and for styling. Were as TRD is for off road and larger/taller sidewalls for a little more cushion to absorb heavy bumps. My only other guess would be that Toyota wants to piss us off.

Right. The tire size like 285/70/17 will tell you the height of the tire. Wheel size changes nothing for clearance, but it does get rid of flexible rubber in your sidewalk the bigger wheel you go with. That’s why real men run 17s on their tundras.

18’s are where it’s at. You want the extra room for more tire. Also the 18” tire to me looks appropriate and natural on the tundra whereas the 20” with a low profile tire looks more like a street/suv setup

Simply a matter of sidewall. Same overall height, but a 18" wheel gives more sidewall than a 20" does.

I can assure you that my 14 Limited TRD will see plenty of off road use. TRD "off road" suspension will disappear shortly since it's severely lacking. It is true that 99% of truck owners don't do squat with their trucks. I could be wrong...maybe 98%.

20190809_141515.jpg 20190808_173105.jpg Just got my 2019 a few months ago. It came with the 20 inch alloys and a terrible Bridgestone tire. I just replaced with 18's and BFG KO 2 for several reasons.1, KO2's just look awesome. 2, KO2's will get me around year round in Vermont very well(used them for years). 3,18's are going to be cheaper throughout the life of the truck. On a slightly seperate note, I have some the 20 inch wheels for sale if anybody is interested

Really?!? Just saying "EIGHTEEN" is more manly than saying "Ssseventeen". :boink:

But, I totally agree with the flexible sidewall comment. :D

17 or 18 are great for a comfortable highway ride, absorption of potholes (without bending / breaking the wheel), handle well and provide the ability to air-down for trail / sand.

Bigger side wall = better tire. My opinion is trucks look better with side wall . If you use it as a truck. My taste I don't like low profile tires and big rims on anything.

I’d rather have 20s if it were an option. Can still have enough sidewall with 20’s. I’ll deal with 18s though. Not like we are talking 24’s here and no sidewall. 17s look stupid on a full size truck. Just my opinion naturally.

20's are all show and no go. That is why they are on the limited's and Platinums. For dudes that want a shiny truck and have a small :censored:....Wait a sec... I got a limited with 20's

A lot more 17" off road tires to choose from than 18". 20" even worse...not bad..but selection is weak

with my 17" RW wheels I can fit 35x12.5 KO2s on stock lift and I just have to trim or bend the skid plate a little. 18's are the biggest I'd go but only if I had 35's on them. the only situation that I'd go larger than an 18 is if I was putting on 44's

I prefer 20s. Plenty of sizes. Less side wall are better for the corners and ride fine. Ride quality is more about the weight rating of the tire.

The 20" wheels and matching tires makes the truck handle poorly ,ie on turns and in snow they have no sidewall strength. The 18" you are able to get a stronger tire for dirt roads, work good in snow and they cost less to replace. JUNKY 20 " I could never figured out why the manufacturers would put them on a truck

More sidewall best for off roading. 20"s good for pavement not much else. IMHO..:mudding:
