My steel building guys got a lot done in one week. Next week I should have all the curtain walls up and start seeing the roof panels being installed. 625C4834-34B9-4CA5-B7BD-CF0AC1948476.jpg

The main barn slab has some more rebar details to do. We should have concrete poured by the end of next week. The lodge foundation to the far right was poured this week.

@1UPPER, is that all bolt up? Any welding going on, extra stuffiness per say to beef up main cross sections?

This is a pre engineered bolt up structure. There are cross cables in two of the roof sections. The structure is rated for 110mph winds. There will also be a curtain wall that drops down 6’ all the way around the perimeter footprint. This will help add even more stability to the structure.

I always have my piers and slabs engineered. So I have soil samples done first then engineers design the steel specs, depth of footings or piers. So I take lots of steps to make sure everything is going to last and hold up over the long haul.

Now the barn will be a hybrid building. It will have bolt up columns & rafters with purlins. Some sections of the barn will require welded components. I’ve got 3 1/2-4 months for the barn steel shell.

I had to go by one of my old clients house this week. So I got to see this laundry room addition project I did about 6 years ago. My favorite parts were the knotty alder barn door, cast iron farmer sink and the custom island cabinet on antique style wheel casters. 3FAED0A5-099E-4F46-8184-8F2D1F91D8D5.jpg E14D1D37-4244-4089-809F-76BB4714D389.jpg

My better half has wanted me to build wooden boxes around these pole planters. Took some old redwood fenceboards that had laying around from my fence replacement a few years back.

    Before:

    IMG_20190817_131411.jpg

Used pocket holes to do the edge joinery, my wife says I love pocket holes. Guilty as charged.

    IMG_20190817_134234.jpg

    The finished product.

    MVIMG_20190817_134211.jpg

I thought about mitering the edges but decided against it because

    1) I'm lazy
    2) Wood is really dry and was concerned about splintering
    3) see point 1 again.

Overall pretty happy with how it came out.

First project at the new house started about 2 hours after I brought the first couple loads over. LOL.

The lawn is decent, but the previous owners had clearly let it grow long, cut it without bagging the clippings, repeat ad nauseum. There were clumps of matted grass embedded in the lawn. I mowed then raked the lawn and got most of it out. Lots of unhealthy patches, so I'll have to do some remediation next year.

We also discovered our master bedroom power outlets don't work. They were fine at the home inspection. Breaker is fine. I'm stumped.

Maybe. I'm gonna take the one I had and at least match the color at Lowes or Home Depot. I was hoping to fill the holes and go without knobs but the holes are pretty big.

It's like a chameleon on my floor, wasn't planning to be that close. I'm happy with it though, total cost so far is under $20 not counting the $100 I spent on a nice sander and pads. Can't count cost of tools I'll use over and over. :D

Thanks to the tremendous amount of frost heave on this property and the downspout that was draining between the concrete pad and foundation, the block wall is pretty beat up. I have an old-timer coming to make repairs to that.

Good to know Jim. Fortunately for us, my wife works at a screen store, and she's having it installed:D. It's the pet screen, guess it's a heavy dutier screen.

That was our first thought. We only have two "dead" switches in the house and they're in the living room. Neither affect anything as far as we can tell, not even the outlets in that room. Every other switch works and there are no switches other than for lights in the master bedroom. When I reset the bedroom breaker to see what would happen, the light lost power and came back so that is connected but the outlets remained dead. No breakers anywhere else are tripped either.

It's all good. I'm going to call our home inspector tomorrow and see what he says. He checked the outlets and they were fine then. I know a couple people who deal with electrical stuff so I'll give them a call this week as well.
