Hey everyone I'm looking at Tundras. I found a 2016 limited crewmax in red 25k miles and its a CPO. They are asking $37,991 KBB says anywhere from 33-39 is fair. What would be a good offer for this truck? Its my first time trying to negotiate at a dealer.

I will assume that the leather seats with all the bells and whistles are what you seek... If not then remember that there is no difference in these trucks as far as drivetrain is concerned. I think you would be able to get a '19 crewmax SR5 for the same money, brand new, full warranty. I did opt for the TRD offload package in mine to get Michelin tires and some other things. If you go the SR5, be sure to get the towing package. Otherwise that seems like an everyday price for a three year old truck.

Also keep in mind interest rates. I went to buy used for 33k left with new for 45k and it was less per month on payments because best rate they give used is 3.9 or 4.9. I got new for .9 with Costco incentives. Just something to think about

Lowest is always better. If at a Toyota dealership they tend to not come down much on used Tundras. Also, if relatively new on the lot then I wouldn't expect much off. The longer it sits the more negotiable it may get. Also end of month seems to encourage more discounts for monthly sales quotas. If still there on the 30th offer them $34k, they may counter $35-36k. If financing the bulk of cost, (as mentioned) there are advantages of buying new.

As a noob to dealerships, I recommend taking a friend or family member along to help you along.

Some vehicle buying tips in thread attached.

Unfortunate I do not really have anyone to help me out. My plan was to go look at it today, If I really like it offer the $34k, I have a trade in that should be around 10k. I got a price of 50716.50 OTD for a new one from a local dealer, that price includes the 3k off they are doing now.

Don't be afraid to walk away... It is your most powerful move. Even if you want it, always sleep on it. Remember that every 30 seconds another Toyota Tundra rolls off the end of assembly line. These are not collectable, one off, or classics. Be reasonable but not stupid.

Trade in offers can be tricky as well. Know your "Trade In" Value. Not uncommon to try a "Low Ball" offer, and their first offer most likely not their best. As mentioned, do not be afraid to walk or sleep on it. If not satisfied with trade-in offer, consider Carmax or similar.

    Good Luck!

I was getting ready to make an offer on another rental property project tomorrow. Just saw the DOW dropped 800. I don't have much in the markets anymore, but I decided to wait a few days to see what happens. People tend to lose their minds when things turn down. I go into a buying spree. Car and truck sales are in the shitter. Lots of 2018's still on the lots as the 2020's roll out. I'd say you are fast approaching a buyer's market. If nothing else, interest will get cheaper and they will start printing more money like a coke-head in Vegas. Your call but don't fall in love.

Make sure you check with financing to see what they think it's worth before pulling the trigger. :quickdraw: Unless of course you have the cash. If you have the cash, can I borrow some money?

I had my car as a trade they first offered 11. Got that to 12700.
Told them ill do the deal if they come down to 36k for the truck. I walked out. He called me 10 mins later telling me a $700 is it and your walking said yup he told me to sleep on it. So still looking lol

Reminder..their goal is to get as much of your money as possible, and your goal is to keep as much as possible (and of course immediately put towards mods on said truck)..but you hold all the power. Literally all of it. I walked out of the dealer for my truck twice..saved me 2,100 and a spray in bed liner!

This is the move. I was helping a buddy buy a car last year. He had to turn in his company car on Monday and it was 5pm on Saturday when we walked out. The manager came out and said “ you are going to walk over $1000? I told him “yes we are.” My buddy caved at $750 off. I wanted to hold out for the grand. You do run the risk of someone else buying it which has also happened to me but they make a bunch of em so you will find a deal.

Yea the truck was really nice, and well kept. I went in say 35500 was my limit but for 36k i would have taken it. Ill keep looking and maybe they will come down. Guy kept saying its only a $10 a month difference.

Tell him to take $10 a month out of his check and it is a deal!!! I always tell them that I am not screwing up the deal over $xxx, they are!

Your Trade in came in higher than mentioned, which offsets the overall cost. Maybe get the trade in up some more and call it even.

This is why I only negotiate the out the door price... Too many variables. In Ohio I only pay sales tax on the difference in price from the trade in to the new vehicle. He can give you more for trade in and take less on the new one and make up some middle ground with the difference in tax. When I bought the last one I knew what the magic number was. I told him to shove his fees and bull$%^& you know where. I also got the current rate and pre-approved from a credit union for a solid interest rate. I was prepared to pay cash for the difference IF it was worth my doing so. They like to play the shell game where they hide the ball under the nut shell and then make you guess. Try to take away the shells. Here is a quick break down of what you have given us.... $36k for the new truck, $12k trade in. $24K difference x 8% sales tax is $1920.00 You I would start at your trade plus $24k and settle for $25k. Prep, documents blah blah blah, they get a kick back for financing your new truck from the bank. Don't pay them to get a kick back. I'm sure it's a nice truck but there are 1000's of them. Just look at how many members are here. Tell them I said to kiss my ass if you don't want to personalize it. I hate stealerships. Play hardball and go find two more in the area.

Have you used any search engines (Autotrader) etc to search for comparables in your area? Search the same make model year mileage etc in a 100-500 area of your zip code. I would be willing to bet you could find same tundra with same features and a bettter deal. Use it for negotiating or contact that place for a deal.

Also if you own your used vehicle your much better of selling privately - if you don’t own it then it’s understandable to use for trade in.

They are all right around the same price.
My trade I owe 3800 on. I have it listed privately figured the tax savings might be worth just doing the trade in
