I had an idea which is probably gonna sound stupid but has any one removed the rear bench in their crewmax or thought about it and replaced with captains chairs? I wanted a bigger box for my subs but have no place to put one without setting a box on top of the seat lol and I’m not gonna do that so any one done it or have any clue if it’s work??

Have never seen done. If there's a will there's a way.

Seems you could find some seats, build some mounts on the floor and done. Maybe find some from a Taco or Highlander., SUV rear seats may be smaller and give you more room. The seat belts may fun to sort out.

If I’m not mistaken, the trim behind the bench seat back is pretty rough, not sure how you could clean that up. Interesting concept though!

I did it to my 91 Bronco. I went to the junkyard found a Ford Van that had what I was looking for and got the rails and all of the hardware. The most difficult part was drilling and getting the rails and everything square.
    Measure, measure and measure.

Forgot to mention I had to anchor the seatbelts buckles as well. You really want this one to be the safest and secure for obvious reasons.

Is the back of the seat a 60:40 split? If so could you just get another “40” side out of a wrecked one and mount it up?

Just throwing this out there for you...
I am currently using the JL Audio stealth box which houses 2 10" shallow subs. The ouput is excellent but limited by the shallow driver's overall ability. Almost to the point at which you are... by thinking of any possibility that would get you more airspace. Well my other plan was to build my sub box right in the middle of the truck. Remove the center console storage and build a custom console that goes from the shifter straight back up to the rear seat. There's at least 3-4 cubic ft of space that can be repurposed for bigger subs. I rough calculated that I could maybe put 4 - 10" subs or minimally 3 - 12"s in that space. There is not much to the factory console, it's flat and open, straight to the back. Plenty of space for any enclosure.

Also, If you do find Capitan chairs, you may find the space between the chairs more voluminous rather than behind them. Omo

There are optional 2nd row captains chairs for the Seinna that have footrests like a recliner. They're great. We have them in my wife's minivan. sdut-optional-second-row-recliners.-20160824.jpg

Now that I think about it Toyota is really missing an opportunity to 1-up the luxury trim level game here. Platinum Tundras should have optional rear seat recliners like this in the crewmax. How else could you better capitalize on all that space?

2nd gen Tundra crewmax seats used to recline. But no footrests like those. but for some dumb reason they made them fixed back in the 3rd gen

I think they got rid of the reclining rear seats in 2010. Mine is an '08 so I've got them too.

Incidentally, this is a major reason I haven't seriously considered moving to a newer truck. I don't see any features on the newer trucks that are good enough for me to justify giving up the reclining rear seats.

    Mine is a 2012 and I’ve got them. ;)

The only feature I want from a 14+ is the instrument cluster. I hate having to look into all the different holes just to check vitals. It’s so much cleaner on the newer trucks.

Old thread I realize, but thinking about doing this for a sub enclosure in my 2014 DC as well.

The passenger rear seat I understand (it unbolts from the 60 portion of the rear seat assembly), but HOW did he achieve the driver's side seat? At first I thought he might have obtained another "40" piece, but that won't bolt up. Custom fabricated cut 60 and mount? Staring at my rear bench and I can't figure that side out.

Anyone? I've emailed James as well to pick his brain.

    Main area of question:CaptainsChairs_Tundra.jpg

I'm about to try and put two 40 sections in the back of mine. I'm hoping my theory will work. I know the 40 won't bolt to the 60 area. But if the back seats are designed like the front I should be able to make it work.
After looking at my rear seats. My first idea will not work. I was hoping the backs of the rear seats came off the the front seats. They do not. The bottoms unbolt so I can't just swap.
What me and my wife have decided is to take the 60 section. Cut the extra 20 section bars off, take the leather cover off so we can wrap it around the inside section, sew and attach mounting points like what exists already.
Why the heck did toyota make the mounting width different on the rear seats, sucks. Determined to figure out a way to get my audio system back in my truck. I will post pictures as we mess up each step so you know what not to do lol

Why not buy another frame ,40 section and cut down the 60 part to accommodate it?

I would buy another 40 if It would mount in the 60 mounting spot but the 60 bolt holes are wider so my only real option is to cut down the 60. I did a complete rear seat delete on my 08 cm. I don't want to do that again. I want to keep 2 seats. Me and my wife are going to begin cutting the 60 down this week. Work on it a little everyday I don't get off late. I found replacement 60 if we muck it up
