Recently we've had several members get in accidents in their Tundra's and I believe one person mentioned having trouble getting paid for the mods they had done. This got my attention so I decided to call my agent and get the scoop. I can't speak for every insurance provider but in my case(Met Life) they will cover your modifications but only if you tell them in advance. Basically, you can't get free coverage and then expect to get reimbursed for this which actually makes sense.

I had to send him all my receipts from truck improvements in PDF format along with pictures. In a few cases I didn't have the receipt so I'm not sure if they would actually pay out on those.

I totaled everything up and found that I've actually spent over $8K on maintenance and improvements since purchasing my truck in 2016. Total value added to my policy was $8,300 and my premium increased by $166/year or only $13xx/month. To me, this is worth it. Now I know I shouldn't get completely screwed in the event that my truck is totaled.

Perhaps this is common knowledge but I wanted to share anyways as I know many members here have sent a lot of money improving their trucks.

This may seem like a ton of work but I'm pretty organized and had all my receipts in one place. I only spent around 2 total hours doing this. If you're not already saving your receipts you need to start now.

Here is a snippet of the chart I used to add everything up.

Yep, it's why I keep all of my purchase emails as well.

I think I’d be better off not getting paid than I would itemizing all of this on a form my wife would have access to.
