    Excellent points!

I have a CCW and have been carrying a gun since I was a kid with a .22 rifle roaming the Idaho woods. I grew up with guns. My dad was/is a sporting goods store owner, professional big game hunter, and Marine sniper. My stepdad was a cop and FBI. I was a federal LEO for a few years, former Navy, then Army and currently in corporate security.

I'm on a few gun forums and the two most common attitudes and comments that drive me nuts are:

    1) "Most defensive shootings happen at less than 7yds and less than 3 rounds fired, so I only practice at 7yds and carry a 5-shot revolver."

    2) "If there is an active shooter, I'm running away. It's not my job to risk my life for others and probably get shot by the cops by mistake"

This shooting is a perfect example of why everyone with a CCW needs to be proficient at longer distances and carry at least 10 rounds of at least 9mm. I carry a S&W M&P40c that holds 10 rounds. I have an X-grip adapter that allows it to use a full-size M&P40 magazine that holds 15 rounds. I compete in GSSF matches which require hitting a man-sized target at 25 yards, off-hand, in timed fire. I check all of my defensive handguns at 25 yards and if I can't get a 5-shot 2" group with a rest, then I don't carry the pistol.

The second statement is a tough one. I grew up with the mentality that I was a good guy. That I am here on this planet to do good and to protect and serve others. If I encountered an active shooter situation, and I did not rush towards danger and attempt to stop evil, then I would consider myself a coward and a failure and an embarrassment to my family.

But that's just me and my upbringing. I understand other's trepidation at engaging an active shooter, but if you chose to carry a firearm in public, then you volunteered a certain amount of responsibility to your fellow man.

As to why we are seeing so many mass shootings these days; I don't know. I think it has to do with a combination of many factors. Lack of mental health treatment, declining morals and personal accountability, political correctness, social media, glorification of violence on TV, in movies, and in video games, etc.

The rate of occurrence began to rise steadily after the 2008 election.

I believe these situations are the result the fact that evil dwells among us, and will do as evil does regardless of the feel good laws passed in the heat of the moment.

Yep. Blaming video games is ridiculous. Tens of millions around the world play games and are not violent. This has been debunked many times over.

    Also true.

And the UFC has become very popular as well. Does this make everyone just go start street fights? Nope!

Just like the popularity of sports video games hasn’t increased the athleticism of America’s youth!
