No they don't scratch at all. The underside of the pad is a softer, non abrasive material (but durable).

Forgot to mention. I use a Thule Insta-gator. Works pretty good but only a 1 bike in-bed solution.

Check out @KB Voodoo . I saw his rack in person a couple weeks ago with a bike on it. Looked pretty awesome. And functional with a Tonneau

Raceface Tailgate pad. Carry 6 bikes. They never touch. They never move. I never have to take a wheel off.

I'm using Rocky Mounts Drive Shaft Track on the deck rail system. I really like that setup but it does sit the bike up kinda high so that the handlebars are above the top of the truck. I have to remember that I can't get into the lower level of my parking garage at work with the bike mounted else I'd have a really bad day...

I'm a newb in the MTB world, how much of a hassle and how unsafe is it to constantly be removing and reinstalling the front tire on your bike? That's one of the main reasons I keep considering a tailgate pad. I'm nervous that I'll install the wheel wrong and hurt myself on a ride cause it falls off hahaha

I know for me and my dh bike removing the front wheel is a pain in the ass because it’s not a quick connect. Means tools and time. I’m lazy anyway haha

On a standard mountain bike (even with a thru axle), it is the easiest thing in the world. It takes 30 seconds, and it's the most secure way to carry a bike.

I've always used the different rocky mounts track for fork mount (the bikes holds up really solid unlike tire mount bed racks) also used a race-face bed mat for a while and it did scratch the tailgate of my Taco. The only way bed mats don't scratch is if your tailgate is always kind of clean(no dust or mud). I installed a roll-n-lock cover and basically lost my tracks so now figuring out a solid way to fork mount the bikes.
This is how I ended up mounting in my Taco with the backflip.

Quick opinion on this...I bought the Kuat NV 2.0 from Amazon. It is expensive, but incredibly engineered. Integrated locks (for both the bikes and hitch) and absolutely no rattle, thanks to their design. The rack folds up to lay perpendicular to the bed, and folds down to allow access to the truck bed via the tailgate. The latch for this is even designed to allow foot operation. The rack is built for 2 bikes, but expandable to 4 bikes if needed....Too many thoughtful features to name.

    Here's to the Gnar,
    Drew

I use the Yakima tailgate pad. Very easy to get my bikes in and out. It fits up to 6 but the most i've used it for is 4.

I bulit it with some stake pocket anchors some aluminum spacers and some square pipe from Lowes. I used the bed deck rails since I took them off when installed my new bed cover. 20190531_110808.jpg

Kind of a pain to get them up and down but I have a collapsible step ladder to help me with that. I used to store them in the back until I got my decked system. This is the best way I have found without adding a hitch to the Airstream.

I have several options for my bikes...

-if I am riding solo after work I pop the front wheel off and put it in the bed under my locking tonneau cover. Obviously only good for 1 bike and short drives

-I have a Thule tray/ cradle type 2 bike carrier on my wifes 4runner. Works super well for 2 bikes. I have the extension so can fit 4 bikes but the rack gets very long so I found it dangerous for city and highway driving. It obscures the tail lights and is longer than other drivers think. I got rear ended once but luckily no damage to truck or bikes.

-race face pad in the tundra. Works super well but where do you put all the gear for a family holiday?

-I use the north shore rack system for 4 bikes. Works super well. not too long. carries bikes of any size or type including kids bikes.

check it out. I think it looks cool too and folds down quickly if needed. I can tip it back on the angle setting and still drop the tailgate. No affiliation with the company, just a happy user.

I used HERCULINER on the tubing. I am out of town but if you need more info of pics I can definitely se d some when I get home

Worked a little bit today on finding my way around mounting a fork mount on the bed rail with my roll n lock cover in it. The issue with the roll n lock cover (I didn't know this) is that the roll n lock rail blocks half of the stock bed rail soooo your bed rail is useless. Anyway I’ll fab some bracket tomorrow (did all the measuring today and its already fab’d on my head) that will let me use a fork mount to hold my bike in place and stop scratching my line-x and my Ibis. Will post tomorrow how it comes out.

I have a NS4 rack myself. I can tell you from my last purchase. The rack hangs a little low for steep stuff. Backed up a steep hill, bound the bike against the rack and snapped the carbon rim.
