I am looking for a GPS that is good for on road and off road use. I think at this point I am going with lowrance or Magellan. They both have ohv maps fire roads etc... Anyone using 1 of these or anything else that works good off road? My head unit works good for on road stuff just looking for something when in the middle of know where that I have never been. With a large screen and trails routes etc...

If you decide to use a iPad or tablet based gps like Gaia make sure the tablet is a cellular version. This will prevent you from having to use an external gps antenna since it will have a built in gps chip.
I have used Motion X for about 2 years and just recently switched to Gaia. After one weekend of use in my opinion Gaia is far superior.

What about when you're off-grid and no cellular coverage?? Dont you need a piggyback to the app so it knows where you are?

I bought a cheap Samsung Galway 8” Tab E off eBay for $50. It is cellular capable so it has GPS. I don’t have a cell plan for it and it works flawlessly off grid with GAIA.

Is Motion X a Philip Kahn thing? I swear I've seen it on the sides of his race boats. Anyhow, he's a local here and also the guy that invented the camera phone.

Same here, my iPad and phone seem to work fine without cell signal.

No need for cell service. All your after is the built in gps chip that comes with the cellular version

I'm assuming you guys without cell service are downloading offline maps ahead of time? Most GPS apps that I've used will show a dot where you are but will not show detail unless you've downloaded the area map beforehand. I have GAIA on my tablet but it's a new setup so haven't used it offline yet.

I have paid for Gaia premium and plan to continue. It is by far the best gps type app I have found or used anywhere. Its private land overlay is surprisingly good; perhaps derived from ARCGIS maps used, at least in Texas, by many appraisal districts.
