Looking to upgrade my head unit, if the price is right. Seen this and it appears to be simple enough to install, not to knowledgeable when it comes to audio systems. Does anyone know if this has all the plugs I need to retain my stock features(back up camera, usb insert, etc.) I know a maestro is needed for steering wheel functions.

Not plug and play. You'd be better off with a Pioneer.

Yeah, better off with a name brand. There was a good one out there recently for around 250. Forgot the brand but a solid unit. There are a few posts somewhere her about it

I wish I could remember the name of it. It's something like i650, maybe pioneer. However most are not plug and play, you'll need something for backup cam and steering wheel controls. A maestro and to2 harness will run about $125 itself, but you can get a PAC system for about 50 i think

Not sure to be honest. I have a kenwood and I think I just grounded that wire to the body of the headunit but I cant recall for sure

Well darn....have to read up on it more.
Or just hold out for the upgraded 2020 oem units and see if its simpler.

Installation for most head units isn't that difficult. There are parking brake bypasses out there that are cheap. Pick the head unit you want, go on metraonline.com and it will give you the part numbers for the dash kit and wiring harness that you need. There are steering wheel control solutions on there as well.

I have the eonon 10.1, basically the same thing. Definitely not plug and play, have to get a wire harness, Metra dash kit, back up camera adapter, antenna adapter, splice 2 wires for steering wheel controls

I dont think the 2020 OEM headunits will be plug and play, and will have a different wiring schematic. Sorta like the instrument clusters on 2018+, Im pretty sure those arent compatible with the 2014-2017.

Last Christmas I bought a Pioneer with Apple and Android connectivity for my fiance to put in her 2002 TRD. She insisted on installing it herself. She did all the wiring, and i helped run the auxillary, microphone, and USB hook ups out from under the dash. It was troubling to buy and hook up the parking brake bypass, but I think we even managed to get the dimmer to work with the headlights. It isn't the most neat and professional job, and sometimes there a slight popping noise when turning off the key, but that's most likely due to the parking brake bypass not being grounded. Everything seems to work ok. Most features are enabled I think

Not long after I bought my 2004 in 2009, I took it to some professionals in Carson City, NV and they did an awesome job with a Kenwood with Garmin navigation, and sub with amp under the seat. Still sounds and works great today. I think it's worth it to pay the professionals, but there's some pride in doing it yourself.Screenshot_20190728-224654.jpg

I bought a premade parking wire tap i think off of ebay, and followed the instructions. Pretty easy.

You can use the radio of your choice. I personally like the Alpine ILX-W650 because it has great sound quality, car play and android auto.
I would really recommend getting the maestro and wire harness. It will literally be plug and play. The rear camera is 5v so the maestro takes care of that. You will retain your steering wheel controls and car add additional operation to them as well. The Alpine will display gauges with vehicle info that it gets the data from the maestro. You'll spend a little more but completely worth it.

For the bypass you can use a pac tr-7 or a microbypass.

Alright for my install I didn’t have a factory camera so I installed my own. Ran the cable up the passenger side frame rail zip tied to the existing harness and through the grommet under the passenger footwell. Reverse trigger is in the driver side a-pillar and is the green wire in the lower plug if I remember, very easy to tap and run over under the dash to the head unit.

I used a PAC-TR1 for the bypass of parking brake, super stupid easy.

I recommend you purchase your head unit from Crutchfield and they will provide install instructions, wire harnesses, dash kit, and support advice should you need it at no cost. If you have steering wheel controls you’ll need to get the module for that which is extra but the basic wire harness is free.

Get a more known name brand; Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, maybe JVC. They all have various price ranged units and good historical performance. Unknown brands may work but not really worth the risk........

Contact Crutchfield they have plug and play wire kits and give great feedback. I use them always. At least point you in the right direction

Do yourself a favor; ask for crutchfield gift cards for your birthday or Christmas and increase your budget. It will be WELL worth it in the end. Crutchfield offers the best customer service and includes most things that you will need to install it yourself. I have installed dozens of stereos from them in many cars / trucks and it’s fun and easy. But when I have gone cheap on the head unit I have ALWAYS regretted it. Up your budget a bit, get a name brand and have fun doing the install.

Whoops, just saw your post above. I installed a kenwood in my father in laws 4Runner and had the same issue. We repositioned the microphone and that helped.

Bought one last year for my fiance. It has a lot of features, but its cheap. You can tell when using the interface. Very small font almost like an oversized cell phone on sitting in your dash. The Operating System is slow on this unit as well. 100% recommend a better-known brand.

Great point. I was considering this https://www.amazon.com/Alpine-Elect...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=J8N25PDNJ0CANGP08X6H
Until I heard about 2020 Tundra coming out with Apple CarPlay. Hope someone builds a harness to make it plug n play for us.
