    Hey Guys

So I had a 2008 Tacoma for 9 years, great truck but my boys outgrew the back seat. We traded it on a 2017 4Runner for the towing ability and big back seat. But really, I need a truck. We’re currently in between camping trailers right now. We had a 1950lbs 17’ travel trailer but plan on upgrading to a 19’.
The trailer I am buying is the fibreglass Escape 19’ weighing 2860 lbs. It’s a light fiberglass shell and aerodynamic like an Airstream.

Really I never tow more than 3000lbs, keeping in mind I live in Canada and gas is $5.00 a gallon, should I get the 4.6L which I have to add a tow package to, or get the beast, 5.7L

I honestly would say to go ahead and get the 5.7L if budget allows. To further add to the towing capability, ensure that the rig is towing package equipped. I'll have to reference what exactly entails the tow package, but you're essentially getting the hardware upgrades (think bigger rear axle core + 4.30:1 gearing + tranny cooler (?)).

Depending on what year truck you are looking at, 2016 and newer 5.7s with tow package come with the 38 gallon tank. 2015 and older have the 26 gallon and i believe all 4.6L came with the 26 gallon tank. Have more fuel capacity could be a factor for you

I think the 4.6 will handle anything your 4Runner can handle. But you won’t regret the 5.7. I don’t think you’d save enough on gas to be worth going with the 4.6 and why limit yourself later on down the road.

I'd bet the fuel economy is pretty close, especially when comparing towing. One is working much harder than the other one to pull the same load. The 4.6 is a 20% reduction in torque/hp, not terrible but I bet you'd still end up with terrible mpg and regret losing out on the power

If you find the perfect truck with a 4.6, get it. But just get the 5.7. The 1 mpg unloaded difference won’t matter that much in the long run

5.7. MPG is about the same and 5.7 may be better with a trailer.

Not all 5.7 with tow package come with 38 gal fuel tank.

Can you even find a 4.6? Dealers don't stock them here.

You would have to special order it. Any dealing with the dealer gets reduced when not grabbing something that has been sitting on the lot.

In addition, the 4.6 is discontinued in 2020 .

My 4.6 towes 2500 just fine. But I don't think the MPG is that much better. No complaints, I got a helluva deal on the truck in 13, but unless the price difference is huge, get either if the price is right.

Thanks for all the replies. I’m just waiting on Canadian Cash incentives to go from $6000 to $8000 and I’ll pull the trigger.

    5.7 it is.

I think EPA rating is +1. Go for the 5.7 with factory tow package. Also resale will be better.

I was towing a 3100lb Dry TT with my wifes 07 4runner 4.0 and it wasn't bad. I now tow the same trailer with my 05 Tundra with the 4.7 and it feels like beast mode. I vote 5.7.

Well you guys convinced me to get a 5.7L but I got to the dealership and there where no 5.7 trucks for 120 miles because of rebates.

    I found a 4.6 SR5+ DC 4X4 for $34K which is a screaming deal around here.

    Start the mods

Running Boards to keep the salt off the doors.

I heard that the tacoma actually tows more than the 4.6L. I recommend you get the 5.7. You will find a 5.7L on the lots soon. Reason is the 2020+ tundras will all be getting rid of the 4.6L option all together. So all of the new trucks will be 5.7 and lots of used 5.7L will be cropping up.

You are already talking about mods and the 5.7L is perfect for that.

I noticed someone said nobody ever complains about too much power. I would beg to differ. I bought the 4.6 because I knew I wouldn’t need more power. There’s a reason they make those ya know? And if you’re paying 5 bucks a gal. your bank account might not complain, your wife might, but your bank account may thank you for buying the actually very powerful 4.6 and as long as you stay within your towing limits, get a transmission cooler and break controller, you’ll be a happier richer camper.

5.7L without thinking twice. You never know, you may want a bigger camping trailer in the future. You'll already have the truck to pull it. You gotta rationalize it.

Our new custom built camping trailer is almost finished. Built by Escape Trailers in British Columbia. Should be around 3000lbs. Well below the towing capacity of the Tundra 4.6. Someone stated buy the 5.7L in case you buy a bigger trailer. This is my last trailer. The forever trailer. I am more likely to buy a new Tundra Twin Turbo than a bigger trailer.

I have dragged my Casita all over the place with the 4.7 and usually it is no deal at all but in the mountains it is a lot more effortless with the 5.7 to me.

Add to that the 5.7 is working a lot less hard and the MPG seems better most of the time while towing or not and it seems like a no brainer to get the big motor if all else is equal.

I have also read that the 4.6 feels considerably like there is less "Grunt" than the 4.7 did and I don't think I would choose the smaller one anyway.

    YM will V for sure!

Oh and I am in my 4th or 5th Forever Trailer right now as well?

Will the 4.6 do what you are asking...yes. Will the 5.7 do it better....yes. Will you be wishing you bought the 5.7 in 6 months...yes Will you lose whatever you saved in gas on the back end when its time to sell it....yes. Buy the 5.7, you will never regret it :)
