Your wife did not ask you to humanly collect the snake and transport it to an undeveloped area a few miles away? Mine did when we found 2 small snakes under our out door storage bin. Unfortunately the hoe i used to collect the snakes cut them into multiple pieces.

Since red diamond rattlesnakes aren’t on the endangered species list, it was him or my kids.

Looking at the comments, the best guess is - stalled the engine and lost the brakes. He could have pumped them and had brakes, or could have used the parking/emergency brake. But the heat of the moment I don't think the driver did those things. Possibly part of the danger of having a capable rig without the experience.

The other truck rolling down the hill backwards at 30mph and smashing into him??? The other truck I’m guessing stalled his truck and lost the brake booster? He probably thought he completely lost his brakes and didn’t even try stomping and pumping on his brakes nor thought of pulling his e-brake.

Note: For all I know the dude who rolled back could be very experienced (rolling backwards down a hill like that without flipping was either skill or divine intervention). Maybe he did try pumping the brakes and a brake line busted? Too much unknown. But even without power, pumping the brakes will pressurize the system enough to slow the rig down if not stop it all together.

Would a locker help in this situation? Or power loss means everything goes off?

Potentially yes. The hopping is what made him lose traction initially, not sure how he managed to stall as that should be an automatic.
The power loss resulted in no power brakes because no power to the booster.

seems like a couple takeaways from this...

give people (especially attempting an obstacle) plenty of room. if you are following them up a hill, wait a little further back and be ready to move. if you are following down a hill, wait until they are clear at the bottom.

Another takeaway i believe would have helped (tell me if I'm wrong, I'm learning too) being in lowest gear would help. Automatic trans- drop down to 1st or 2nd. 4wd- put in 4lo. engine/trans would have slowed the descent.

lastly, good reminder for us guys/gals with kids out on the trail... @sdde4n @Jackjack @Porschetech29 @Sunnier @fisherman951
they stay in the car or somewhere safe. not to say they cant practice spotting and be out on the trail (@sdde4n has a great spotter sitting shotgun) but we need to be mindful of these dangers because they may not see it.

    thanks tony for sharing that
